Max Kretzschmar

The goalscoring midfielder joined the Cards for the second time in the summer of 2018, following a successful season with Hampton and Richmond Borough, and signed a new contract ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Max first played for Woking during the 2016/17 season and, despite an injury-hit campaign, still managed three goals in 24 appearances, including the crucial goal against Dagenham and Redbridge on the final day of the season which sealed the Cards’ National League survival. He returned twelve months later to spearhead the club’s efforts to immediately return to the top tier of non-league football, joining manager Alan Dowson and a number of teammates in making the move from Hampton, following their play-off final defeat in 2018. He started brilliantly, scoring the dramatic stoppage time penalty on the opening day of the season to clinch a 1-0 win away to East Thurrock United, and was arguably the standout player during the club’s strong start to the year. More crucial goals followed, including the winner at Torquay in the FA Cup, and a stunning strike against Billericay Town just before Christmas. Sadly, injuries hampered his progress for much of the second-half of the campaign and, after limping off against former club Hampton on New Year’s Day he managed just one more start until mid-March. Whilst he struggled to rediscover his best form during the final weeks of the season, he still netted on three more occasions to take his tally for the year to 15 in all competitions, including a memorable equaliser in the play-off semi-final against Wealdstone.

Before joining Woking, he started his career with Wycombe Wanderers, where after graduating from the club’s academy he made an impressive 85 appearances, including 73 in League Two, whilst also scoring nine goals. After a difficult first year with Woking he joined Hampton where he became a firm fan favourite, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, and helping the Beavers reach the end of season play-offs. He scored in both the semi-final win over Chelmsford City and in the final against Braintree Town, only to sadly miss out on promotion via a penalty shoot-out.
