Woking made untroubled progress into the quarter-finals of the Surrey Senior Cup as they comfortably saw off Farnham Town at a chilly Kingfield. Four first half goals were enough to kill off the game as a contest and ensure there were no upsets as the Cards rarely moved out of second gear on their way to victory.

Garry Hill, watching from the stands, gave a debut to keeper Elvijs Putnins – the young Latvian U21 international had little to do on a night when keeping warm was the main problem, but his kicking and handling were excellent and he looks a very good addition to the squad.

Woking lined up with Josh Griffiths, captain Joe McNerney, Brett Johnson and Mike Cestor across the back, a midfield three of Lee Sawyer, Billy Knott and George Frith with Gavin McCallum and Brett Williams on the flanks. Jayden Stockley started as the lone front man.

The Cards were quickly on the front foot with Williams nodding the ball over the bar in the seventh minute when free in the box. A Sawyer corner then flew across the six-yard area but no one was able to get a touch before Stockley’s long-range effort was well saved by Giles, the Town keeper.

Woking opened their account on eighteen minutes as McCallum’s through ball intended for a rampaging Cestor was deflected into Brett Williams’s path who scored with ease.

Two minutes later it was McCallum’s turn to double the lead. McCallum met Cestor’s excellent first time cross from the left flank at the far post and he headed home.

After half an hour Stockley had the ball in the net only to see his effort ruled out for offside. But it mattered not as the young striker added a third almost immediately after, tapping home Billy Knott’s defence splitting pass.

Williams had a further “goal ruled out for off-side and then after a Woking corner was not cleared Stockley turned to crash a shot goal wards only for the diving Giles to make another excellent save.

Cestor headed over Lee Sawyer’s beautifully flighted cross after the midfielder had exchanged passes with Billy Knott and then Williams, leaping high to connect with a McCallum cross from the right, saw his headed effort hit the bar.

Finally on half-time Gavin McCallum completed a mazy run with a fine shot from the right edge of the penalty area that flew into the far corner of the net for his second and Woking's fourth.

It had been a very comfortable first half for the Cards with Farnham failing to press the ball and conceding far too much space to the Conference side.

Half-time: Woking 4 Farnham Town 0

At the start of the second half Kevin Betsy replaced Lee Sawyer and shortly afterwards Jack Parkinson and Bradley Bubb were on for McNerney and Stockley.

It took little time for the Cards to find a fifth goal as Bubb flicked the ball home from close range with his first touch of the match and this after a Williams’ shot had been deflected and McCallum’s further effort had rebounded off a Farnham defender.

From then on the Cards, perhaps unsurprisingly, reduced much of their play to something of a practice match as they passed the ball around on a surface that remains problematic after the recent poor weather.

As Farnham found themselves with a little more possession, Putnins was called into action to get quickly to the edge of his box to deny Dillon and then, with the visitors’ best chance of the game, Smith saw his effort blocked superbly by Cestor. Meanwhile Williams yet again hit a post after connecting with McCallum’s cross.

For the last quarter Billy Knott took over the holding role, again showing his versatility and composure, spraying passes to all parts of the pitch – yet another man of the match performance.

A final chance for Woking came as Griffiths beat three Farnham defenders and crossed for Williams whose first time effort was saved by Giles, the ball rebounding of the keeper’s legs.

Woking now move into the quarter finals where they will play Godalming Town away next Tuesday evening 12th February.
