Pre-season friendly
2nd August 2014

Heavy pre-match rain made for a slick surface in Woking's penultimate friendly before the new season kicks off next Saturday. The Cards lined up very much as expected in defence and midfield. However, with manager Garry Hill still looking to boost his options in attack there was a further start for trialist Jordan Robinson, who was partnered by another fresh face in Troy Hewitt.

The home side had a couple of chances early on. The first saw 'keeper Jake Cole out fast to halt an attack before former Card Liam Enver-Marum failed to control the ball when well placed.

The build-up from both sides was slow in the hot conditions. The visitors, however, were enjoying the majority of possession and were having the better of the exchanges. In particular, the Woking midfield quartet of Josh Payne, Keiran Murtagh, John Goddard and Theo Lewis looked to be moving into top gear, which augured well for the season ahead.

Ten minutes into the match the lively Lewis had a snap shot blocked before Robinson had a long-range effort saved at the second attempt.
The home side then hit back when Enver-Marum shot wide.

Joey Jones looked accomplished in the middle of the back four, bringing the ball out of defence calmly and distributing it effectively.

The Cards went ahead just before the half-hour mark when a great run and cross down the left from Lewis presented Murtagh with the easy task of heading home.

Shortly afterwards, the lead was increased following an incisive counter-attack which saw Goddard sweeping home a loose ball in the penalty area.

Half-time: Basingstoke Town 0 Woking 2

There were no changes made at the break and the home side came close early on when a free-kick was pushed away from under the bar by Cole. A mix-up in the Woking defence then almost let Enver-Marum in but he was not quite sharp enough to take advantage of the opportunity.

From this point on, the changes came thick and fast, resulting in a lack of cohesion in the remainder of the match. A good passing move between Giuseppe Sole, Scott Rendell and Lewis set up a good chance but Lewis fired wide.

As the game drew to a conclusion, a couple of corners failed to trouble the visitors' defence.

Not to be denied, however, Basingstoke scored at the death from the best move of the game, three quick passes setting up Julian Owusu to sweep home.

This was another good workout for the Cards as they complete their preparations for the first league game of the season, away to Alfreton Town on August 9th.

Why not come down to Kingfield this coming Tuesday evening (August 5th) when the team hosts a West Ham United XI in their final pre-season friendly?
