Cards seek second win

Woking v Dartford
7.45pm on Tuesday 12 August 2014

Garry Hill’s side got off to a superb start with a 3-1 win at Alfreton on Saturday. Can they build on that on Tuesday evening when rivals Dartford come to Kingfield for the first of two successive home games? The Cards are a very capable side, playing an attractive, passing brand of football. Come on down to Kingfield if you possibly can and cheer them on to three more points!

WOKING

Garry believes that he has now got quality throughout his side, with healthy competition for places – and there was plenty of evidence of that at Alfreton even though the Cards were missing the influential Kevin Betsy and captain Mark Ricketts. The strike pair of Scott Rendell and Dean Morgan will surely plunder more goals, supported by a talented midfield in which newcomer Theo Lewis shone on the right flank. At the back Joey Jones did well alongside Joe McNerney at centre back, while Aaron Howe fully justified his selection in goal ahead of Jake Cole with a faultless display.

Garry has now got the “nice problem on Tuesday evening of deciding whether he can accommodate the returning Mark Ricketts in the starting line-up. The decision may be made slightly easier if John Nutter has not recovered sufficiently from the injury which appeared to force him off in the second half at Alfreton.

DARTFORD

Tony Burman had made a number of signings, with a view to playing in the Conference South, before the news came through of the Darts’ reprieve from relegation. The one player who could not commit to the higher level was ex-Card Paul Lorraine, who had joined from Ebbsfleet.

Several of the ‘new boys’ are, in fact, familiar faces at Princes Park: another ex-Card Adam Green, who spent last season at Basingstoke after joining from Dartford; striker Andy Pugh, who had a loan spell from Cambridge United; defender Rory McAuley, who was also on loan from Cambridge last season; and striker Harry Crawford, returning from Barnet after having departed in January 2013. Another signing has a strong connection with the Darts: striker Tom Bradbrook, brother of the Darts’ captain Elliot. The wholly new arrivals are keeper Jason Brown from Sutton United; Luke Daley from Braintree; and Peter Sweeney, with some 250 League appearances to his credit. Burman has also added six Academy players to the first team squad.

Familiar names still at Princes Park include winger Ryan Hayes, Lee Noble, Lee Burns and former AFC Wimbledon defender Mat Mitchel-King.

On Saturday the Darts went down 2-1 at home to Wrexham, with Tom Bradbrook scoring. Dartford are always a tough side to take on, and the defeat will no doubt make them even more determined to avoid a worrying start to the season.

LAST SEASON

Woking 3 Dartford 0
12 November 2013

This was a very welcome result for the Cards, who were stuck in the bottom four following six league and cup games in which they had failed to achieve a win. Significantly, it marked the debut of loan signing Jack Marriott, who lit up Kingfield with his pace, power and eye for goal. All three goals came in a 15-minute spell in the second half, with Marriott grabbing the first and setting up the second for Scott Rendell before Joe McNerney headed home to make the three points safe.

Dartford 5 Woking 1
18 February 2014

The tables were turned emphatically in this match in which relegation-threatened Dartford crashed five goals against an out-of-sorts Woking side. Both teams came into the match on the back of fine away wins – Woking at Gateshead and the Darts at Wrexham. The Cards took a very early lead through Scott Rendell but it was immediately cancelled out by the on-loan Alex Wall. The game remained fairly even till the 33rd minute when Joey Jones was sent off. The Cards still remained well in the game till just before the break when Wall finished smartly to make it 2-1.

The second half proved increasingly miserable for the 10-man Cards as Max Cornhill struck twice and Lee Noble scored a fifth just before the end.

NEXT GAME

The Cards have another home game this Saturday when Macclesfield Town are the visitors. Come on down to Kingfield again to cheer on the team.

Come on, you Cards!

P.S. Please bear in mind that the A320 Guildford Road is closed both ways between the Harvester in Ottershaw and Brox Road, between the hours of 7am and 7pm until 26 August. Please, therefore, allow extra time for your journey to Kingfield if necessary.
