Commonwealth silver medallist attending WISC

Chris Sexton - 28th August 2014

England high jump star Martyn Bernard, who recently competed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will provide the inspiration for young people with a range of disabilities when his visits Woking Inclusive Sports Club (WISC).

Martyn, a Commonwealth silver medallist and Olympic finalist in the high jump, will host two sessions delivering expert coaching and raising participants’ aspirations on Sunday 31 August and Sunday 28 September 2014, in his capacity as a Sport England Sporting Champion.

Based at Woking College, Woking Inclusive Sports Club (WISC) offers young people from Woking and across Surrey, aged between 7 and 19 years old with physical or neurological disabilities (PAN) and their siblings, the opportunity to get active through weekly sports sessions.

Martyn said: “I’m really looking forward to this exciting multi-sport Sportivate project at Woking College. I cannot wait to help them get fit through sport and tell them about my own experience of proudly representing England and Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games. Sportivate is a fantastic way of getting young people into sport and that is something I am really passionate about. I believe that as a Sport England Sporting Champion, I can inspire everyone in attendance to raise their own aspirations of what they can achieve and motivate them to be the very best versions of themselves that they can be.”

Sports on offer include boccia, new age curling, wheelchair basketball, table cricket, goalball, football and more.

All sessions are overseen by fully qualified, experienced coaches and volunteers. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay and support their youngsters. There’s no need to book, simply turn up and play!

Woking Inclusive Sports Club is a joint initiative between Woking Football Club, Woking Borough Council and Active Surrey, with funding from Sportivate.
