Woking vs Folkestone Invicta
The Buildbase FA Trophy
Saturday 24th November

After advancing to the second round of the FA Cup at the expense of league rivals Torquay United and returning to the top of the National League South following back-to-back away victories over Gloucester City and Slough Town, the Cards are looking to make their mark in another competition this weekend, with Folkestone Invicta the visitors in the third and final qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

After seeing undoubtedly his team’s worst performance of the season at home to Bath City just under a month ago, manager Alan Dowson has masterminded a well-timed return to form over the last five games, with the Cards winning four and drawing one – and keeping three clean sheets. The boss will now be hoping his side can make a positive first step on a potential path to Wembley, although he undoubtedly won’t underestimate the Isthmian League Premier Division side who finished fourth in their league last season – only missing out on promotion via the play-offs.

Indeed, Neil Cugley’s side have plenty of firepower despite currently sitting in an underwhelming 15th place in the league table, just between our county neighbours Leatherhead and Merstham. They’ve already scored 27 league goals this season, more than the teams in second and third place, only being let down by their leaky defence. One player to look out for is striker Johan ter Horst, a product of the Folkestone youth system who had spells with Hull City and Maidstone United before re-joining his boyhood club, he has six goals so far this campaign.

The last time these two sides met, back in the late 1990s, the Cards won 8-4 – so why not come down on Saturday and see if there might be such a repeat! It’s also a great opportunity to purchase your tickets for next week’s second round FA Cup tie at Swindon.

Team News

Dowse made four changes for the game at Slough on Saturday – Nathan Collier returned at right-back in place of Ian Gayle, Charlie Hester-Cook was back from suspension to tighten up the midfield with Jamar Loza missing out with a slight injury, while Greg Luer and Paul Hodges replaced Jake Hyde and Nicky Wheeler – who scored twice in our mid-week friendly game with Westfield. Berti Schotterl, who was missing from the squad last week, is expected to be back whilst Christian Jolley is also available for selection again after coming through Tuesday night’s fixture.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Dowse opts to make significant changes for this game, particularly with the Swindon game on the horizon, although no doubt the boss will be keen to emphasize the importance which he’s placing on this game as well. The likes of Duane Ofori-Acheampong and Daniel Spence, who have had limited game time recently, will surely be hoping for the chance to shine.

No doubt fans will also have one eye on the performances of two of our prominent loan players – Charlie Wassmer, who has earned rave reviews for his performances for Leatherhead, and Reggie Young who netted a hat-trick for Farnborough last weekend. With both players due back in the coming weeks it could be an exciting time for Dowse and his squad.
