Cards look to cement second place and play-off advantage

Woking vs Concord Rangers
Vanarama National League South
Friday 19th April 2019

Concord Rangers will be the visitors to the Laithwaite Community Stadium on Good Friday as an Easter double-header kicks-off with our penultimate home game of the regular season.

Despite Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat at fellow play-off chasers Chelmsford City, a result which extended the Cards’ winless run to five league games, Alan Dowson’s side are still very much in pole position when it comes to securing a second-place finish and home advantage for throughout the play-offs. With other results going in our favour last weekend, most notably a surprise defeat for third-place Welling United at Slough Town, we now need a maximum of just five points from our last three games to guarantee finishing second, whilst four points will ensure at least third and a bye through the first play-off eliminators which involve the sides finishing between fourth and seventh.

The Beachboys still have play-off ambitions of their own. They currently sit in seventh place with 61 points from their 39 games – albeit with a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player. They are only above eighth place St Albans City on goal difference and with the likes of Dartford, Wealdstone and Slough also within a point of the top seven, they know they need to continue their recent good form. After a mid-season blip Sammy Moore’s side have lost just two of their last 14 league games, at home to both Torquay and Oxford City, whilst they’ve recently enjoyed positive results against the likes of Hampton and Richmond (4-1), Weston-super-Mare (3-0) and this past Tuesday evening in Cornwall against Truro City where they won 3-1.

It was certainly a close-fought encounter earlier this season when Concord scored in the dying seconds to claim a 1-1 draw, and after two equally tight FA Cup games last season this promises to be another exciting match-up, so please come along if you can and support the team!

Woking Team News

Changes are likely to be limited for Alan Dowson’s side. Ben Gerring will complete the second of his two-match ban picked up for his red card against former side Torquay, meaning Jack Cook and Moussa Diarra are likely to continue at centre-back, with Nathan Collier and Josh Casey completing the quartet in front of Craig Ross.

In midfield, Kieran Glynn has been used sparingly since his move from Salford City and could bring some fresh legs to the team, whilst Kane Ferdinand is now seemingly fit after returning to action in a friendly match last week. Paul Hodges should also be back in contention after being unavailable for personal reasons against Chelmsford.

Concord Rangers Team News

During their victory over Truro, Concord lined-up with former Woking goalkeeper Sam Beasant between the posts, plus a defence of former Dover and Bromley full-back Tyrone Sterling, Jed Smith, Tosan Popo and ex-Woking loanee Conner Essam.

In midfield was veteran Lee Minshull, part of Moore’s setup at Leatherhead last season but better known for his time with Newport County, alongside Charlton Athletic loanee Taylor Maloney and Sam Blackman. Up front were arguably the league’s deadliest strike duo, Alex Wall and Jack Midson, who have 35 league goals between them – 19 and 16 respectively – supported by Sam Ashford. All three players scored in the win over Truro.
