Healthy Lifestyle Club

The Community dept have just completed a ten week Healthy Lifestyle Club with members of Woking Mind . The sessions involved one of our trainers leading fitness classes as well as giving advice on nutrition. In addition with the help of Woking Borough Council and the Woking Leisure Centre we were able to arrange for members to use the gym . On the final week a walk was organised from the Corner House in Woking to the Football Club where a celebration lunch was held.

SCHEME WINS AWARD

Woking FC runs a thriving Football in the Community scheme.

During 2004/5 the scheme grew immensely, with its profile increasing all the time. The scheme has forged strong links with most schools and has managed to fight off stiff opposition from other football providers. We now have good working relationships with head teachers and PE staff; schools have already shown us their commitment for this year.

We have seen a growth in schools programmes during 2005/6 and an even bigger one planned for 2006/7. Our holiday courses are attracting more children and we have worked hard to promote the good work done by the scheme.

The introduction of Healthy Lifestyle talks has proved to be very popular and we see this as a continuing area of growth, with plans being adapted for all ages.

Working with the Council on a number of projects has helped both parties, and the hard work done by the scheme has been recognised with Woking Football in the Community being voted Non-League Community Scheme of the Year 2004/5 . We believe this shows true recognition of how far we have come in a short space of time.

Our future aims are to move into other areas within the community such as children with disabilities, young adults with learning difficulties and older members of the community.

Curriculum & After schools Clubs

The scheme has developed and runs structured coaching guidelines, which include codes of conduct. Programmes within schools are based on a six-week programme i.e. one half-term. We offer curriculum time training, teacher training, help with schools activities and after schools clubs.

During the year 2004/2005 the scheme delivered curriculum time training and after schools clubs at 15 schools. All our coaches work to a pre-set programme, which is developed and adapted according to the children's needs. Our after schools clubs attract between 20-30 children.

During the year we ran five 6-week (term time) programmes at 15 different schools

During the 2005/06 season we worked in 23 schools. We are ran Junior Football Organisers' Courses at Bishop David Brown and Woking High.

Charter Standard

During last year we helped three schools gain schools FA Charter Standard by providing help with the completion of forms and help with teacher training and pupil training.

Regular feature in Woking FC matchday programme

The Football in the Community has a regular page in all Woking FC's matchday programmes. The page gives details of the scheme's activities, promotes its soccer schools, highlights any community visitors and recently included a 'school of the week' feature.

Workplace Students

The scheme welcomed 8 workplace students in 2004/2005. Two came every Friday for the whole season, while others stayed one or two weeks. Students were encouraged to go out to the schools with the coaches to help during curriculum and after schools training and healthy lifestyle talks. They also assisted in the office and had a chance to watch and join in training with the youth players. We had more to joining us last season.

Coaches

We developed guidelines for all our coaches and provided them with structured coaching sessions and codes of conduct. During 2004/5 we helped financially and practically six young people to gain their level one coaching certificates. Two of these were girls. All our coaches receive regular assessments, with schools being asked for their input. We have also introduced a coaches' appraisal system.
