I was greatly saddened to hear of Phil's death only last week. He was always a gentleman to me when I played at Woking in the early 70's. My condolences to his family and friends at Kingfield.
- Denis Cheeseman
For me Phil summed up Woking. You could pop in and see him and have a chat. With him passes an age.
- Carl Hill
Made me feel at home from the very first day to my last. Phil was Mr Woking and my family and I will really miss you. You always showed great support to me and I will never forget that.

- Neil & Kelly Thomas
In the short time that I worked at the club, I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to meet Phil. He was completely dedicated to WFC, and lived and breathed it daily with a passion and commitment that I have rarely seen. He has touched the hearts of thousands and will no doubt be remembered fondly by us all. RIP Mr Ledger.
- Clare P
Phil Ledger was a kind and caring man who I was privileged to know for the past 30 years. A true Woking F.C. legend. Rest in Peace Phil.
- Eric Brackstone. President of Welling United Football Club.
I knew Phil when I worked at Woking Magistrates Court. He would always find time for a chat about football and was a true football man. He will be sadly missed.
- Graham Burge
Very sad to read the news of Phil's death, he was an incredible man who gave everything to Woking FC. On a personal note he was a great help to to me when I became a director at Woking and I'll always me thankful to him for that. RIP Phil and I don't think you'll have too much trouble getting a ticket for where you're going!
- John Dukes
Phil once helped me with a Geography Project that I was doing at school. He was patient and kind as I asked him question after question. He is a true legend in Non-League Football and he did so much for Woking FC.
- Antony W
RIP Phil, A great man.
- Harry Horstead
A big thankyou for everything you did for me. A massive thankyou for the praise you did give me and it really helped me to grow into the roles I have at the football club today. A great inspiration to take onto the football with me when I coach, Thanks. RIP Phil
- Clive Biggins
It was a privilege for me, as Mayor of Woking in April 2008, to appoint Phil as my Eminent Citizen for his untiring work in the Community. Whilst he is probably best known for his service to Woking FC and football in Surrey and beyond, he also served as a Magistrate and as a School Governor for many years.
I am so pleased that this Civic award gave and will continue to give in years to come a recognition of Phil's work in the Community.
Thank you Phil, not just from football fans, but also from many members of the local community.
- Cllr Bryan Cross
Rest in peace Mr Woking the club will never be the same, thank you for what you have done always.
- Ian Petrie, Somerset

In an industry where players, managers and staff come and go. Phil was the heart and soul of Woking FC, relentless in his loyalty and passion for the club. Irreplaceable and never forgotten. Our deepest sympathies to his family and all at Woking FC.
- Kevan Brown & family
Speaking on behalf of Aldershot Town F.C. where I am Chaplain. Phil is spoken of by all who knew him as a most affable and gracious man. Phil will be sorely missed by WFC as has been John McGinty our Chairman who died late last year - Phil was present for the Remembrance that was held for John and that was the last time that we personally conversed. RIP Phil Ledger
- Rev Mike Pusey
Does life go on? Yes. Will Woking FC, will Woking ever be the same again? No.
Phil Ledger was married to the club, and to the town. We should grieve, but I'm very certain that Mr Ledger would want us all to enjoy every moment watching WFC. (well almost every moment)!
Much respect Phil.
Thank you is indeed a massive understatement.
- Stephen Lewis
My father Mike Denney knew Phil for many years. They played football together a long time ago, and were great friends. Phil always had time to talk and help me with my football and refering.
Mike died this time 2 years ago, so maybe they can continue their great freindship.
Condolences to all his family.
- Andy Denney
Very sad to hear the news - condolences to his family
- Gil & Lyn Hamm
My mind goes back to October 2007 when Farsley Celtic visited Woking in midweek. Phil could not do enough for us and made us very welcome. He gave complimentary tickets to half a dozen supporters who had made the journey. A true gent.
- Alan Hirst - Asst. Secretary, Farsley Celtic F.C.
I have only had the privilege of knowing Phil for a relatively short period of time whilst working for local radio, and will always be grateful for the invaluable help and support he provided.
Thank you Phil, and God Bless.
- Adrian Harms
Irreplaceable. Too many great memories to thank you for. Legend. RIP.
- Tim Abrahams & family
Phil
" Thanks for the Memories "
Your support in those early days in business brought us together and eventually we were able to reciprocate by giving you support with our company, OLC, becoming Main Sponsor for WFC.
What a truly exciting period for the Club and ourselves, promotion to the Conference League and Trophy Finals at Wembley, we were all so proud.
We send our sincere condolences to Angela and all the family.
- John & Marlene
Many are very sad that 'Uncle Phil' passed away.
Some 30 odd years ago there was a hot summer and I would go into a shed with Glyn and Percy and prime a blow torch and then go scraping and painting. He was a hard but fair task master.
He would tell me about his time at Wimbledon before, much later, Merton decided top flight football didn't suit them.
We then worked together later on sorting out various machine moves at Unwins in between my fishing on a lovely river and pool.
As time went by we spoke about football, Courts and many other things. 'Uncle Phil' was always a man to go to in a crisis and unfortunately the last time I saw him was too long ago. Kenny Sansom was playing for Hayes at Woking and Ray Lewis was assessing the referee.
The abiding memory and the thread through the messages appears to be Phil's heavy accent, the fact he was a true gentleman and his true love and effort on behalf of Woking FC. He was so proud of that FA Cup venture with West Brom and Everton.
There were many other attributes that people will remember.
How apt that Phil was a Ledger and can easily slip into being a LEGEND and sadly missed.
- Andrew Quinney
A very big loss to the town of Woking and it's wonderful football club.
My sympathies to Mr Ledgers family and the club isn't the same without Phil around.
Lifelong supporter (Lowestoft)
- Steve Pullen
I was sorry to head about the passing of Phil Ledger, I had the pleasure of meeting him two times. He will be a great loss to the club and everyone who knew him. R.I.P.
- M.Eastmead
In the ten years I was associated with Woking FC Phil was always somebody I could turn to if I needed any help especially in the early days while setting up the Supporters Club. Very much his own man he was a true gentleman totally dedicated to Football and most importantly to Woking Football Club. In fact he was Mr Woking FC without a doubt. He will be sorely missed by many people and is irreplaceable. My sincere condolences to all his family.
- Keith Raymond
Rest in peace and rise in Cards glory.
- David Fowles
So sorry to hear the sad news. Phil helped me on many occasions whilst at the club. A great man who had time for everybody and always put a smile on people's faces. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. My thoughts are with Phil's family. RIP Phil.
- Adam Green
In my role as Conference statistician, no one helped me more than Phil Ledger.
He took me under his wing and 'looked after me'. He sent me programmes, cuttings, team sheets, anything he thought would be of interest to me.
Although we spoke quite regularly on the telephone, and less frequently at Conference 'occasions' (I wasn't invited to as many as Phil!) it is only now, at this sad loss, do I realise I didn't thank him enough.
I will sorely miss a dear friend.
- John Harman
I first saw Woking in 1958 when I was 8 years old, I will never forget the time and effort Phil put in at Kingfield. Thank you so much. God bless.
- Graham Neal
Years ago when I was a bit of a rebel about the lack of progress at Kingfield, Phil was always the one who seemed to understand. I well remember his words of advice delivered in that slow sort of heavy accent.
He always had my complete respect & I doubt that anybody will be able to match his long record of total dedication & hard work for his beloved 'Cards'
Rest in peace - you deserve it.
- Bob Greenaway
I first met Phil some forty years ago when he helped to arrange a memorial match at Kingfield for one of our players tragiacally killed in a road accident. He was a lovely man who always found time to help and offer advice to local football clubs. Football will be the poorer without him. I shall not be at Saturday's match at Kingfield but will be just over the fence at the Loop Road pitches thinking of how fortunate Woking FC have been to have had the services of Phil.
- John Billing, President Old Wokingians FC
A true ambassador for the club, football and the community may his tireless effort to both never be forgotten. RIP
- Paul Homer
Thank you for all your positive support to Westfield Primary School, where you served as a much respected Governor for many years. Always ready to lend a hand, and to come up with a solution. Always a gentleman. We shall miss you.
- Sandie Sharp
I first met Phil in approximately 1976/77 when I then lived in Kingfield. He was always on the ball on everything he became involved in, and he was always a firm but just man. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him and we, at Woking Referees Society who Phil knew will remember him for the mannerism in which he approached and dealt with matters. May you rest in peace and you will never be forgotten that is for sure.
- Roy Butler, Hon. Chairman Woking Referees Society
He was a lovely man who was very kind to myself, Mum and Sister.
I feel very lucky to have met him and will miss seeing him at Woking Football Club.
- Debbie Atkins
I have only been with Woking a short time but have known of Phil for a long time and I feel very honored to have met him, He was so kind to me when I joined Woking and I'm sure I will never forget that. Rest in Peace Phil, one of football's legends xx
- Debbie Jackson
Phil I'm sorry I didn't get to say goodbye in person... You always gave me good honest counsel when I needed it.. I knew I could always come to you if I needed advice or help. It was a pleasure to work with you during my time at the club.. It was a privilege to know you and I will miss you greatly.. Rest in peace and enjoy the best seat in the stadium looking down from above.. Gone you will be forever remembered for your contribution to our beloved Woking!
- Phil "lofty" Shorter
A wonderful, kind, caring man who we were so privileged to know well. Many thanks for everything you did Phil - the world is already a poorer place without you. Rest in peace, will miss you so much.

- Kelvin
Thank you for all your guidance, advice and help you've given me over the years.
I owe so much to you.
Rest in Peace Phillip.
God bless you.
- C
Dear Phil How he will me missed, I had known him since the 60s and when I was at Wimbledon FC in the 80s. He never changed and like me loved a good moan, but his amazing knowledge of the rules of football and secretarial legislation was outstanding. Last saw him at the directors and staff Christmas party. Will like many others, miss him very much. By the way a very useful and brave keeper at Plough Lane in spite of the ribbing.
- Alan Cooper
I had the greatest pleasure of dealing with Phil for many years, in his role as Governor of Westfield Primary School. I recently joined the Governing body with Phils' encouragement. I will miss his visits to my classroom and as a school, we have lost a great 'Gov'!!! Our thoughts are with his family.
- Claire Catchpole
You were always there for me Phil giving sound advice all the time, even at my time over the border at the Shots!
I will be forever grateful.
- Andy Morgan
A true gentleman and it has been a privilege to work with you. Your spirit will always be in the Boardroom.
- Peter Sheppard
We always knew Phil as Ledg, very appropriate a true legend in local football, always helpful, great to talk to about football and alike. You just don't get people like Phil anymore. True loss to football.
- Stuart
Simply - 'THE BEST'
- Wendy Wilcox
I worked with you for a short time only. It was enough to give me a small insight into what you have achieved and how you have touched so many people. Rest easy. We can only hope to carry on some of the best things you did.
- Barry Hitchcock
We have lost a true gentleman.
- Terry
I have known you for many years and I have never known you do anything other than your best, whether it was playing against you or in your Woking FC duties you always put your heart and soul into it, God Bless.
- Les Francis
When the news of his passing reached Australia we were all deeply saddened.
Phil Ledger was a great ambassador for English football and a loyal servant to Woking Football Club for many years.
As treasurer of Woking FC in the 1970/1980s and sponsor of the club during that period through my then local company, The Glass Centre Woking, Phil became a close friend. He was a real gentleman and he dedicated untold hours to the running and success of the club.
Phil's considerable efforts over the years undoubtedly placed Woking Football Club firmly on the English football map.
Our thoughts go out to Phil's family during this difficult time.
- Ray Cheeseman, Brisbane, Australia
I know you will be smiling down on Kingfield for a very long time. Look after everyone up there, we'll do you proud down here. Rest in Peace Mr Woking FC x
- Ben Cavey
Phil was a great man, he helped me more than he knows in my early years at Unwins. He loved his football & his club will be missed more than words can say.
- S.Quinney
Phil was a true gent with great qualities, the two that stood out for me were his great sense of humour and his honesty. A proper legend who will be sorely missed by his family and friends. R.I.P Phil.
- Giuseppe Sole
Phil was a true gentleman; always willing to assist those of us who did not have his level of experience. Dealing with him was a pleasure - he was always professional, but never officious. The warmth with which he dealt with younger administrators (such as myself) was always appreciated and never taken for granted.
Sincere condolences to Angela, the extended Ledger family and all at Woking FC.
- Gareth Coates
It was with sadness that I was given the news of Phil's passing. Phil was instrumental in making my Woking career possible and for this I will always be grateful. During my time at the club he became a good friend and will be missed.
- Andy Ellis
Philip,
You were always kind and considerate, a dedicated son of Woking Football Club, and your presence will be sorely missed. We were friends for 40 years and my continuing loyalty to the club was built upon your incredible efforts to make Woking a place where you would always feel at ease, and very welcome. I will miss you Philip, you have left us much too soon.
- Ken Oram
Woking legend, R.I.P. Phil, heart goes out to his family and friends.
- Nicky Nicolau
I will miss hearing that you can always be contacted on your portable... and I am very glad Hazel and I were able to visit you in hospital on Thursday, to hear you greet us with a "Good God, it's you" in your inimitable way. Thanks for all the memories and for the kind words.
A great loss for Angela and for the Club.
- Jennifer
Many many memories over a long long time through Woking FC and Unwins through Dad. Many laughs along the way while working in the club shop, waiting for a call and him saying "I've got some post here for you - Must go today".
Condolences to Angela and family, thinking of you.
Love Hazel
- Hazel Long
Sad day for the club and most of all, his family and all those who loved and respected Phil. RIP

A wonderful man, very kind, good company to be with. John McGinty and myself were always made to feel very welcome to a home match when Aldershot did not have a game. He will be greatly missed by all, especially his beloved Woking FC.

- Mike Eastmead
Phil Ledger; a true legend!
During my 13 years as a player with Woking FC, Phil was always there to offer help and advice when needed, even for non-football related 'scenarios'. His voice echoing from the old stand at Kingfield on matchdays is something I will never forget. Phil's wit, humour and his ability to get straight to the point always made conversations with him a great pleasure.
Thank you Phil, for everything.
R.I.P Mr Ledger, Woking FC will never be the same.
My condolences to all Phil's family. Lloydy.
- Lloyd Wye
Phil - it just won't be the same without you - I assumed there was an FA rule that said you'd go on forever. Working with you was always a pleasure, an education and often a good laugh. You put such effort into helping newcomers to the Club to understand its history through telling your stories and making sure so many ex-players were invited back to the club to share theirs - ensuring the Club's history and present were woven together. RIP Phil.
- James Aughterson
I first met Phil in August '93, when we were the "new boys" & Woking one of the "giants" of the Conference. He made us all feel so welcome, and any match against Woking was very special. Many years on the Conference committee with Phil followed, so many stories & laughs along the way. Phil you were a true gentleman, and I feel so privileged to have known you.
- John Husk (Dover Athletic)
R.I.P Phil, thank you for all your help during my time with Woking FC. A true legend of Woking and non-league football.
Gone but never forgotten,
Reeksy.
- Stuart Reeks
I was so shocked to hear the sad news of the passing of a Woking Legend. I knew Phil for 3 seasons, and his passion and commitment to the club was outstanding. He was always there for help and advice and he will be sorely missed by a lot of people in football. Thank you for everything you have done and I wish to pass on my respects to all your family for their loss.
I hope the club can do something fitting in his honour.
- Nick Gindre
Coming to Woking will not be the same now, for the thirty seven years I have supported Woking FC you have always been here rarely missing a game. Working with you for the last six years it will be your countless stories and dry sense of humour I will really miss. You have been a great servant to the club and no one will ever take the place of "The Ledge". Love Jane XX
- Jane Spong
One of my earliest memories of Woking is being told to 'get off the pitch!' by Phil in the early eighties. Phil was as dedicated to the club when 87 people watched us as in the good times. I got to know him initially because my mum worked at Unwins with him and he was always kind and reliable. I last saw him on a cold, wet Tuesday night at Bath City, as ever he was unwaveringly dedicated and when he knew we were going put two tickets aside for us!!!
- Jonathan Woozley
As a former player in the 60's & early 70's I got to know Phil as a great person not only in football but also in life. I now live in North Devon but still watch Woking match highlights on the Woking FC website and I know Phil would have been delighted at the way his team are now performing. R.I.P Phil.
- Dave Evans (Taffy)
I served on the Conference committee with Phil for many years and he became a great friend. No visit to or from Woking FC will ever be the same. A great football man with a dry sense of humour. A really sad day for me when I found out yesterday.
- John Baldwin (Hednesford / Kidderminster)
My sympathy to Phil's family on their loss, I hope Woking FC go on to do him proud.
- Tim O'Callaghan
I loved the craic we used to share on my (frequent) visits to Kingfield when I called in, usually just to pass the time of day. The stick you gave me for being a Shots fan was always good humoured and warm. I will miss seeing your friendly face Phil. Sleep well.
- Craig Matthews
You went out of your way to help make it easier for me to attend games, won't forget that. Thanks for all the countless things you've done for Woking FC over the years too.
Rest in peace Phil.
- Nick Shaw
A true legend in Woking folklore and will be deeply missed but never forgotten especially when I sit in the LGS every home game. Deepest sympathy to all family and friends, rest in peace.
- Southampton Steve
As a former player (1967-70) I remember Phil well as a mainstay of the club. That he served the Club for so long bears witness to his unique position in the Club's history.
- Gerry Carver
There's many things that I could say about Phil but one word that comes to mind is a Legend and a true football man. In my time with the club i will never forget the laughter, words of wisdom and support he gave. Phil made everyday at Woking FC a great place to work and because of that I will dearly miss not seeing Phil sitting behind his desk on days that I return to the club. I'm sad to hear he has gone but will always remember the good times. RIP Phil (Ledge)
- Scott Harrison
I only met Phil a couple of times, but it was clear that he was a Woking man through and through. I recall trying to get a ticket for the Everton/Woking FA Cup fourth round match - I was living in the midlands at the time - and on getting (late) to Kingfield on the Friday before the match, was directed to Unwins in the hope that Phil was still there and might have a ticket. He was - just as I pulled in, he was leaving, but he was unfailingly kind, went back to his office, got two tickets and wished me well.
That was the manner of the man: nothing was too much trouble. And even though we narrowly lost 1-0 the following day, I will never forget the experience.
I'm still a season ticket holder - even though home games are a 90 mile journey - and it was through people like Phil that I have so enjoyed following this great club.
Rest In Peace, Phil.
- Alan Dorey
Mr Ledger you will go down in Woking's history as a legend.
In my time at the club I couldn't have wished for a better person to turn to when help was needed. I'd walk into your office to hear a groan followed by "yes Mr Jalal, how can I help you?" it never failed to make me laugh!.
I was truly saddened to hear you had gone, rest in peace Phil.
- Shwan Jalal
Phil will be dearly missed and I'm very sad to hear of his passing, he was a lovely man and helped me on many occasions.
- Shaun Tysoe
Phil was a great friend to Merstham FC when we played four consecutive CCFL finals at Kingfield. He even let our mascot Charlie into the boardroom, a real gentleman who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
- Richard Baxter, Hon Sec Merstham FC
Phil Ledger was a true legend in his own lifetime, an accolade that very few achieve - rest in peace Phil.
- Dennis North
I'm very sad to hear the passing of Mr Phil Ledger, whenever I visited Kingfield to watch a match and to add players past /present Phil was always there welcoming me with open arms. He was not only a real gentleman but also true friend I will miss him greatly. Phil R.I.P.
- Michael Berry
A great football man who will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
- David Nessling
I was sorry to see the loss of Phil. I have known him since he was a goal keeper. We were both on the club committee in the 50's and saw Woking win the Amateur Cup. We live in Chelmsford now but Woking is still my top team.
- Joyce & John Tickner
I was privileged to have known Phil for almost 50 years and like many of us will miss his friendship and undoubted loyalty.. Rest in Peace Phil...

Dear Phil,
It certainly will never be the same at WFC,it will always be Phil's desk, Phil's office and your Club really. Thank you for keeping all the staff amused with your endless anecdotes and no one will ever bark down the phone "Woking" like you did when you picked up a call! The end of an era. xxxx
- Jan Francis
In my time at the club nobody was held in higher regard and respected more than Phil 'The Ledge' Ledger !
You always knew where you were with Phil, he said it how it was and everyone loved him for that.
Walking through the big green gates at Kingfield and not being greeted by Phil will feel very strange, but he'll live long in the memories of all who were privileged enough to have known him.
I'm sure his family are extremely proud.
Sleep well Phil.
Macca.
- Gary MacDonald

- Ted Hickman (Merstham Football Club Chairman)
I only met Phil once but I can only be impressed by his dedication and all of these messages written about him. It's certainly fair to say that if I got half the responses Phil's had when I die that I'd have had a life to be proud of.
RIP and condolences to all your family and friends.
- Tom Johnson
It's rare to see so much respect so universally shown for someone. What a truly great person he was. Woking FC was greatly blessed by Phil, and his death is a huge loss. RIP Phil.

Phil,
Thank you for everything you did for Woking Football Club. Your name has always been synonymous with the team I grew up supporting and you will always be remembered by fans not only of Woking, but throughout the game.
Rest in peace.
- Steve Tervet
I was proud to stand on the touchline today before the match to honour the minute's applause today for Phil. Whilst I was standing there, I cast my mind back to the day when I went to the club for an interview with Phil for the job as Club Administrator many years ago. He offered me the job whilst we were sat in the dug outs and said "Can you start tomorrow then". Woking FC was Phil's life and he will be sadly missed by everyone, I will miss him and the banter we used to have every week at the club.
RIP Phil. God bless you.
- Sue Day
Phil. I cannot thank you enough for how welcome you made me feel when I took over covering Woking for the Herald from the late Dougie Wells.
You were always a found of knowledge about Woking and Non League football, willing to give me help and guidance over the years and you were by a long distance the nicest grumpy old bloke I have ever met.
- John Whitbread
Phil,
English language has millions of words but I can't find the right words to express how I feel. I'm sorry the nurses told you off for me bringing you a bottle of whisky when I visited you last Saturday!!! I always look when I walk past your office to prove to you that I'm wearing a tie on match days!!! You have always been wise and helpful to me. R.I.P will miss you mate

I first met Phil in 1952 while working at Unwin Bros, and watched him play at Woking and Wimbledon. I now live near Liverpool and support Everton and I shall never forget how pleased he was when Woking played Everton in the FA Cup. My thoughts go out to Angela and his family at this sad time.
- Bob Boylin
I think the heartfelt condolences expressed by officials of other clubs show what Phil contributed to non-league football and as a Woking supporter I know Phil's contribution to our club is beyond measure.
Deepest sympathy to Phil's family and friends.
- Nick Doyle (skippy)
In the thirty odd years that I knew Phil he was Mr Woking and had all the answers that one needed,I learnt a great deal from him. he will be sadly missed at the club, his knowledge cannot be replaced. I could not have gone on to do many things in the game without everything I learnt from Phil. There are very few true legends in this world, but Phil was one of them. I will miss him more than any other person associated with football. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
- Alan Barnes
Phil was the first person to bring myself to Woking in 1980. I had a great friendship with Phil and many great memories. When we look back on the history of Woking F.C. we will remember him as a true legend. RIP Phil.
- Colin and Frances Lippiatt
Where do you start, so many fun times in such a short time. I remember you chucking an egg at me, me watching in horror as it dropped to the floor and you in stitches when it bounced back up. Calling for players to come and see you yet you didn't actually know who they were. One of the most genuine people I've ever met and a great laugh. You'll be missed Phil but the club will continue knowing what you've done to have it where it is now. R.I.P Mr Ledger
- Chris Sexton
Knowing Phil for many years, Woking FC will not be the same place without him. He was someone you thought would be there forever. I will miss his wit and sense of humour on the coach on the away days. A total gentleman to the end. Condolences to the family.
- Andy Repton
Although I only spoke to Phil on a few occasion very briefly, I was always bowled over by his deep knowledge of our beautiful game. He always had a ready smile and full of laughter. Thank you Phil for your dedication, time, effort, enthusiasm in making this club what it is. You will be sorely missed. Rest-in-peace Mr Ledger.
- Nigel Dean
Phil epitomised what a true supporter should be. He stuck by his club through good and (very)bad times, purely because he loved the place. You cannot replace people like Phil, but we must always remember him and how lucky we were to have him. R.I.P. Phil
- T
R.I.P Phil thanks for all you have done for the club we all love, you will be missed by all.
- Chatty
Sincerest condolences to Phil's family ... a true WFC club legend who will be missed.
When we played an inter-company game at Kingfield one evening in the Ryman League days, Phil made a point of coming to welcome us personally and talk to us after the match in the members bar. A true Woking gent.
Rest in Peace
- Steve Pont
Many laughs along the way, never dull with Phil and always a smile to greet you, thank you Philip.
- Matt Crossley
What a great loss to football, Woking, and his friends and family, my heart goes out to his two daughters Tessa and Sarah, and Phil's five grandchildren, one of whom is carrying on the family football tradition. God bless.
- Catherine
Ledgend. Rest in Peace x
- Luke Coleman
A gentleman. I am so very glad that I got to meet Phil Ledger - R.I.P.
- Ben Pennick
We are still in shock and greatly saddened that we will not hear Phil’s familiar distinctive voice saying “Phil here” on the end of the phone with some important news to tell the fans. He was a football man through and through with a heart of gold, who truly loved the Club. He personified all that is great and good about non-league football. We were and remain in awe of Mr Ledger. RIP Phil.
- John Moore & David Holmes
Such a caring and thoughtful man. He will be sadly missed by all.
- Shirley Little
I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to Angela and family. May you Rest In Peace Phil. You'll be in our heart forever.
- Kelly Grant
I first saw Phil Ledger as a lad when he played in goal season 1954-5 against Bromley (we won 4-1). Since his playing days,he has served our club in so many capacities, always with a true and unselfish dedication. I think we owe him an enormous debt. Without Phil, there have been times in the past, when we might have not survived. He has always been there when needed and Kingfield will miss him.
- Robert Turvey
A true gent who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with your family at this sad time.
RIP Phil.
- Steve McKeown
RIP Phil. Thank you.
- Alan Duffy (Duncan Biscuit)
Having known Phil for over 20 years he was a great influence on my football life, always prepared to pass on help and advice which have made me a better person for having such a friend. A dedicated football man I hold him in the highest esteem and my thoughts are with his close family and friends at this time. Life and football will be a poorer place without Phil.
- John Moules
R.I.P. Phil and condolences to your family and friends.
- Mike D
I am saddened by the tragic news. Kingfield Road will never be the same. My condolences to Phil's family.
- Guy-Paul Mitchell-Dwelly

- Nigel Atkins
A great man who obviously did a lot for the football club and I really respect you. Thank you so much !
- Sam Brunskill
A true legend who will sorely missed, thanks for your help through out the years. R.I.P. Mr. Ledger.
- Kevin Rickwood
The first time Phil ever spoke to me was when I was a youngster at Kingfield in the mid-70s. I was climbing up the old floodlights with some friends at the time. I can't repeat what he said on here, thankfully relations between us improved somewhat over the years, but it wasn't the last time I'd experience the legendary Mr Woking hairdryer! I have rarely met a man of such charm, wit and knowledge. Pip put us all to shame with his total dedication to the Cardinal and White. Thank-you so much for all the wonderful amusing stories, assistance, memories, helpful guidance and for everything that you've done for our Club over the years - Kingfield will never be the same. Rest in Peace Phil - we'll miss you.
- Mark Doyle
Phil,
Looking back you influenced me more than I even know. From when you talked me through my mothers death and led me down the long path that I still walk today. You were subtly there for so many leading them to be better people and better Cardinals! Thank you and I hope I can influence a small portion of people that you did throughout your life!
- Scott Newman-Bale
Having started watching Woking in 1986 as a 14 year old, I see Phil Ledger as the biggest influence on the football club in the time I have followed The Cards. My abiding memory is being asked on every occasion that we spoke, the last time being last year, "Are you still living in America", even though I only spent 5 months there in 1995! You're presence at Kingfield will be sorely missed by many people. Rest in peace Phil.
- Dave Hall
Phil was such a hard worker often behind the scenes. He believed in the club and whilst often outspoken always did all that he could to progress the football at Woking. He will be greatly missed and I am sorry that I will miss the match as I shall still be on holiday at that time.
- Rosemary Johnson
I have travelled the football world but I have never met a football man with more dedication and integrity than Phil. His reputation reached way beyond Woking Football Club, but it is at Kingfield where his loss will be felt beyond measure. It is the end of an era. So many of us have been the richer for knowing him, and the poorer for his passing. My deepest sympathies to Angela and the family.
- Martin Tyler
Phil, you have been a great personal friend and a great servant to the team I love dearly, Woking FC will not be the same without you, thankyou for everything you have done for me personally and for the club I love. I will miss you dearly. May you RIP.
- Flakey
Mr Ledger,
Though I never knew you personally, you were a constant fixture at Woking FC through my 30+ years as a supporter. I have a massive amount of respect for the dedication you showed to our club during your life & I know that Woking Football Club will never be quite the same without you. My thoughts are with your family and friends at this sad time.
- Rob Crowsley (Twods)
I am truly gutted to hear the sad news and of the great loss to Phil's Family and especially to WFC.
I worked in a small capacity with the club last year and it was clear to see the man was a genuine inspiration to everyone around him. Not only was he the man that everyone turned to for knowledge of the club and the league, he brought a warmth to the club which will be impossible to replace.
The many stories you told me and the "naughty tricks" you got up to will forever keep me close to the club and give me fond memories!
RIP Phil. Mr Woking.
- Richard Taylor
A very sad loss indeed.
Condolences to all Phil's family and friends from across the other other side of the world.
- Paul Bibby (Pablo In NZ)
Phil helped me massively during the opening weeks of the season and played a key role in helping me settle into the club and the first team atmosphere. In the brief period in which I knew Phil, it was clear to me that he showed great enthusiasm and astonishing commitment towards the club. No doubt he will be greatly missed by the players, fans and staff at the club. Rest in Peace Phil.
- Matt Pegler
I first came across Phil when he was a presiding magistrate and I was a very inexperienced advocate appearing in front of him. Fast forward a handful of years and he was the welcoming familiar face at Woking FC. When I lost my job, he got me tickets for my wife and I to see her team Newcastle United in the FA cup final at Wembley. I remain forever grateful for that.
RIP Phil - definitely deserving of a place in "Legends".
- Lewis Hulatt
The word legend gets used too freely these days, but you truly were, and a great person who told it as it was. Honest and genuine, and I will miss your pearls of wisdom.
R.I.P. Phil, you will always be a legend.
- Jimmy Dack
Only had a short time knowing the man, but what a good man he was. Always willing to help and had great character. Rest in peace.
- Damian Batt
A great person who knew how to conduct himself and I will miss working with him and seeing his cheeky smile.
- J
Rest in peace Phil, I had the privilege of knowing Phil before I was at the club and during, he was a lovely man and a joy to be around! My thoughts are with his family!
- Matt Gray
Rest in peace Phil - keep watching from 'up there' as The Cards bounce straight back this season.
I'll belt out a big Wuuuuuuuuuble-yu from Adelaide in your honour
- Dave in Adelaide
I had the privilege of knowing Phil over the last few years. He was a great guy who always made me laugh like many others have already said. He will be sorely missed at the club. It won't be the same walking past his office and not seeing him sitting behind his desk, yelling hello and then yelling at someone else down the other end of the phone. Woking through-and-through R.I.P. Phil.
- Jack Taylor
An honest and trustworthy man, who would always seek to do the best for all concerned. He will be sadly missed, and his passing closes a big chapter of Woking FC's history.
- Andy Downie
Someone once told me, that in football you make many acquaintances but very few friends.
I have made some dear friends in football and Phil, I can honestly say that you were my friend. Having met you all those years ago when I worked at Barnet, and then at Stevenage, you were always so welcoming and friendly and a joy to be around. When my parents became ill, you, along with Geoff, were so supportive and such a help to me in such desperate times.
I will miss your stories, your love of Woking Football Club, and calling your mobile phone "your portable".
Rest in peace Phil. I will miss you.
- Janice Comerford
It has been a privilege getting to know Phil over the last few years - the office and boardroom will seem very empty and quiet without Phil's stories, jokes and (strong)opinions. The club owes him a huge amount - he typified so much that is good - he will be hugely missed.
Many condolences to the family. RIP Mr Ledger
- Ian Nicholson
R.I.P. Phil....
- Balti
RIP, your family should be proud of what you stood for and how you supported WFC. There will only ever be one Phil Ledger.
- Mr Smith
RIP Phil.
Sympathy and best wishes to your loved ones.

- John Stacey
I knew Phil for 42 years. I didn't always agree with his views on football but that is the beauty of the game we both loved and spent so long talking about. Above all I had the utmost respect for him, his knowledge and his dedication to our great football club.
- Graham
I'm sorry to hear that Phil Ledger has passed away. He will leave a hole which is impossible to fill, and there are many out there who will be grateful for the part he played in their lives. My condolences to his family and many friends.
- Rochdale Supporter
I had the pleasure of watching Phil play for Wimbledon all those years ago at Plough Lane. More recently I had the honour of meeting and talking to him at a Dons nostalgia evening. A true gentleman. May he rest in peace.
- P.Baker (AFCW)
Phil. I'm so thankful that Chris Dyke and I came to see you yesterday afternoon and we got to say goodbye. Thank you for being a real friend to me, going back to the days when you worked with my dad at Unwins. It will be strange for all of us to live in an era when you are no longer around - and nowhere near as much fun. The mere fact that the tributes are pouring in from around the country tells its own story. You can now sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge you earned them. RIP Mr Ledger, and Angela, please accept my sincere condolences.
- Clive Youlton
Sorry to hear the news, and a big loss to Woking FC, you may be gone but your will always live on in our hearts.
My condolences and sympathy to Angela and family.
R.I.P Phil
- Tracey Theobald
Thank you very much Mr. Ledger, we were very blessed in having you around....
Deepest sympathies and condolences to your loved ones.
- Rory MacPherson
I have always held the utmost respect for Phil Ledger, today I am very saddened to hear of his passing.
As Secretary of Farnborough Town FC Phil gave me much advice and was always supportive of the Club, especially during our difficult years. I always enjoyed his company and conversations.
His football administrative experience was immense and whilst being ‘old school’ his strong principles and beliefs of football governance coupled with his generosity and understanding with people stood out and left a big impression on me.
His loyalty to Woking FC and the Conference Board was massive and underpinned the great contribution to non-league football that Phil gave.
Men that play for their Club and then continue to serve their Club and community with such distinction off the field for so long are very few and far between. Phil was one such gentleman and he was held in the very highest regard by all that knew him and I am thankful for what he passed on to me and for knowing him.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends and all at Woking FC.
RIP Phil
- Vince Williams - Farnborough FC
Phil loved his cards,he was the king of clubs!
Our thoughts are with Angela and family.
How about renaming the Kingfield road end to the Ledge end as a tribute.
RIP Phil you will be sorely missed by us all.
- Lee & Karen
Very sad to hear the news - condolences to his family and everyone at Woking FC.
- Ray Armfield, AFC Wimbledon supporter
Sorry to hear the sad news regarding Phil, I remember as a young lad watching him play in goal for Woking.
- John Martin
So sorry to hear this sad news. I had plenty of dealings with Phil through both Ashford and the Combined Counties League and feel I have lost a friend. My deepest sympathies to Phil's family and to Woking FC.
- Alan Constable, Ashford Town (Mx) FC
Phil and I were part of the original Board of Directors at Woking, but Phil was always more than a Director. I remember him firstly as Pip Ledger - Woking goalkeeper - a young lad with big hands and, big ears!
Phil had his critics, but he was always available and always working at Woking. Others Directors came and went, but Phil carried on through relegation, promotion and relegation again. Even when busy working at Unwins (the Printers), he could always find time during his lunch hour to visit the football club's offices. I shall miss Phil tremendously and my heart goes out to Angela, his loving partner.
RIP Phil and may God bless you.
- Michael Church
Having been lucky enough to have come in to contact with Phil,I know how passionately he cared about all aspects of Woking Football Club. Simply unique and held in incredibly high regard across the football spectrum. My condolences to all his loved ones.
- Peter Brown
It was a pleasure knowing Phil...my thoughts and prayers are with his family.
- Davis Haule
Rest in Peace Phil. A great man who always made me laugh and gave me a chance at full-time football. You will be missed. My condolences go to his family.
- Marvin Morgan
Phil was a true gentleman, a lovely man. I first met Phil in my role as secretary of Canvey Island. When we reached the Conference he joked that "we had been waiting for you, what kept you so long" in reference to our previous close calls on achieving promotion.
I enjoyed many a conversation with Phil over the following years when our respective clubs played. He will be sorely missed by all in football.
RIP Phil.
- Wayne Purser, Secretary Cambridge United FC
R.I.P Phil we will all miss you
- Connor
I have had the pleasure of Knowing Phil for over 30 years. He was a remarkable man and absolutely dedicated to local football , but his true love was always Woking FC . It was always a pleasure to be in Phil's company and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family.

There will be a song made in tribute to you.
- Thomas Crawford
So many fond memories of one of the nicest chaps we have ever met. We count ourselves so lucky to have called Phil 'a friend'. I was lucky to know him through working at Unwins when I first left school in 1984 and went on to remain friends with Phil right up to the current day through our love of the Football Club. Phil loved Selsey where we now live and we had a wonderful lunch down here one day along with Angela and I had the great pleasure of taking him out on the lifeboat for a trip, which he loved - "Ledgers Life on the Ocean Waves" the headline read I believe! We have a very short mental list of people we are glad to have met in our lives and we have no hesitation in adding Phil to that short list. Lovely, lovely man.
- Lynn & Adrian Corbett
A true legend, a great man to spend time with, the world is sadder place with out him. RIP
- Mark Lawson
I have many memory's of Phil especially the way he was so helpful giving my mum a reference when she was searching for a job and how he would get us tickets for the games. He was a kind and lovely man who will be sorely missed by everyone at Woking football club. My thoughts go out to all his family at this time. RIP x
- Jo Rudrum
Phil was a friend and colleague to all in non-league football, and his energy, commitment and involvement will be sadly missed. Phil's input into Cardinal Red (History of Woking FC) was significant, and was always given in his typically enthusiastic style. His recollection of stories from his father's time as a player in the mid 1920's, and from his experiences with the club were told with clarity, detail and humour. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
- Bob Cumming - Cardinal Red
I have know Phil for more than 20 years. A very, warm friendly and approachable gentleman. Woking FC and indeed football has lost a very special gentleman. They say that no person is bigger than a football club, but Phil Ledger was indeed Woking FC through and through. You will be missed, but never forgotten. R.I.P
- Simon Studd
Mine and my families thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. You were a great help to me and you will be missed greatly by everybody who was lucky to spend anytime in your company. Farewell Phil
- Philip Gilchrist
R.I.P Phil, a true Woking legend. Spoke to you a few times and your love for football and the club shone through.
