5. Ben Gerring

Ben signed a new contract in the summer of 2020 to extend his stay at the Laithwaite Community Stadium into a third season. A powerful and commanding centre-half, as well as a firm fan favourite, he originally joined the Cards in October 2018, answering manager Alan Dowson’s call for more leadership from his defenders. The former Truro City captain fit the bill perfectly and made a near-immediate impact, scoring the only goal of the game on just his second appearance, a 1-0 win over Welling United in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. The Cards would go on to reach the third round proper, facing Premier League Watford, where Ben struck up a friendly rivalry with Watford striker Troy Deeney. He’d finish the season with promotion as Woking tasted victory in the National League South play-offs, whilst his performances also saw him voted into the division’s team of the year. He continued to impress and improve following the club’s step up to the National League where, once again, he was a standout performer as the Cards finished in an admirable 10th place on their return to the top tier of non-league football.

He started his senior career with Weymouth back in 2010, after leaving boyhood club Plymouth Argyle. However, it was only after earning a switch to National League club Torquay United in October 2015, that he truly began to establish himself. He spent the best part of two seasons with the Gulls, twice helping the club steer clear of the bottom four with a late run of form, with perhaps his most memorable moment for the club being the winner in a dramatic 4-3 victory over Forest Green Rovers, who would go on to be promoted. However, loan spells at Truro and Weston-super-Mare restricted his game time at Plainmoor and a permanent move to Cornwall followed in the summer of 2017. A successful season saw the White Tigers finish in seventh place and earn a National League South play-off spot, only for them to lose their eliminator to Dowse, whose Hampton and Richmond Borough side won 3-1 after extra time. A short-lived spell at Billericay Town followed at the start of the 2018/19 campaign before he joined up with Woking for what proved to be a hugely successful season.
