7. Dave Tarpey

Dave extended his stay at the Laithwaite Community Stadium into a third season when he signed a new contract in the summer of 2020. He initially joined the club on a one-month loan deal during the 2018/19 season, scoring three times in seven appearances, helping the Cards win promotion to the National League. After finishing the campaign with parent club Barnet, he returned to Woking that summer, becoming one of manager Alan Dowson’s first new signings ahead of the club’s return to the fifth tier. He went on to enjoy a positive season as the Cards secured a tenth place finish, predominantly playing on the right of a three-man forward line. He scored eight times in 41 appearances in all competitions, including the club’s goal of the season, a late winner in a 2-1 home victory over Hartlepool United.

The experienced forward began his career in the Hellenic Leagues with Henley Town before his performances earned him a move to National League South side Basingstoke Town in 2007. After just over 60 league appearances he moved to divisional rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough in 2009 and became a key player with 31 goals in 115 games – whilst also spending time on loan at Walton and Hersham and Chertsey Town. Two seasons with neighbours Farnborough followed, as well as another short spell at Hampton, before he joined Maidenhead United in 2015. It was with the Magpies that his career truly took off as he became one of the most feared strikers in non-league football. He netted an astonishing 95 goals in 141 games for Maidenhead, including 45 in all competitions during the club’s National League South promotion season in 2016/17, as well as seven in the first six games following promotion to the National League. His exploits finally earned him a career-long dream of a move into the Football League, only for a heartbreaking injury on just his second appearance for Barnet to temper that opportunity. He spent the rest of the season sidelined nursing his anterior cruciate ligament and was left helpless to prevent the Bees’ relegation. The following season he joined Woking, initially to regain fitness, before signing permanently later in the year.
