8. Kane Ferdinand

Kane extended his stay at the Laithwaite Community Stadium into a fifth consecutive season in the summer of 2020. A talented box-to-box midfielder, he first joined the club in December 2016, making his debut for Garry Hill in the Boxing Day defeat to local rivals Aldershot Town. However, things quickly picked up, with eight league wins during the second-half of the season enough to see the Cards clinch National League survival and earn Ferdinand a new contract under incoming manager Anthony Limbrick. He was a near ever-present for Limbrick, making 50 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals, and whilst the season ultimately ended in a disappointing relegation to National League South, Ferdinand remained one of the team’s few shining lights, picking up the club’s Players' Player of the Year award for his efforts. He stayed on with new manager Alan Dowson in 2018 and started the season as a key player. Sadly, an injury suffered in early October restricted him to just 14 appearances. He belatedly returned on the final day of the regular season against Gloucester City before playing a crucial role in the Cards’ play-off victories over Wealdstone, where he came off the bench at 2-0 down and helped his team to a 3-2 win, and Welling United. He retained his spot as a key player throughout the shortened 2019/20 season, helping the club clinch a tenth place finish in the National League, whilst scoring four times in 38 appearances.

The midfielder began his senior career at Southend United in 2010, making more than 60 appearances in League Two across just over two seasons, whilst scoring 10 goals. A move to Championship side Peterborough United followed in 2012 where he made 32 appearances during his debut campaign. Over the next two years, following Peterborough’s relegation to League One, his appearances were more limited, and he spent time on loan at Northampton Town, Luton Town, and Cheltenham Town. He remained in the Football League as he joined Dagenham & Redbridge in 2015 but failed to settle and left the following February. He eventually joined East Thurrock United that September, showing his class for the National League South side with five goals in 13 games, before joining Woking three months later.
