Northwich Victoria 2 Woking 0

7 April 2009

The win at Barrow was great for the club but needed to be followed up with another win, but those hopes crumbled as Woking slumped to a defeat that leaves them staring relegation in the face.

Northwich had avoided defeat in their previous two home games, and started brightly, with their pacy forwards causing problems, along with their height at set pieces. Woking struggled to defend these all game. The first few chances fell their way but they missed the target. Woking responded with a Domoraud shot that also failed to trouble the keeper.

The breakthrough came from a free-kick on the left. The ball was played in and found Grand unmarked. His header was well placed, giving Worner no chance.

Both teams had further chances before half-time but again most were off target. Northwich went into the break fully deserving their lead.

Half-time: Northwich 1 Woking 0

Woking stepped up a gear in the second half and for 15 minutes played some nice football. They created chances, but once again Domoraud was unable to trouble Clarke. Marum created a good opportunity for himself but had his shot well saved.

The best chance came after an hour. A nice move found Pattison in space on the right. He played the ball into the area for Vernazza, who timed his run to perfection. Unfortunately he chose to pass the ball back lamely to the goalkeeper rather than shoot with any conviction and the chance was gone. It was to prove costly as the momentum swung back towards the home side.

Northwich sealed the game in the 78th minute. A move conducted at pace ended with Worner making a fine save but then fumbling the ball over the goal line for a corner. The resulting corner was headed back across goal for Horrocks to tap in from a yard out.

In the final few minutes Woking had another chance but when the ball rebounded off the post, Marum volleyed the ball over the empty net. It summed up Woking?s season ? the lack of goals has cost us far too many games.

Overall it was a disappointing performance, with far too many players off the boil. The fans were frustrated at the end and you could understand why.

Woking: Worner, Kamara (Rhodes), Lorraine, Konan, Anderson, Lambu, Vernazza (Ledgister), Bozanic, Pattison, Bossman (Marum), Domoraud.

Subs not used: Quamina, Sintim,

Attendance 450 (53 Woking fans)

My MOTM: Patrice Konan (pictured): looks much more assured at centre back and had a solid game.
