Terrrific Turnout

Local community representatives and sports-lovers turned up in their droves to support Woking and Maybury Football Club from the Surrey and Hants Border League, who put up a sporting performance against an experienced Woking line-up. Looking very professional in their new sponsored black and white quarters strip, which replaced the regular all-green kit seen on the Wheatsheaf on Sunday mornings, and urged on by vociferous, excited and fervent supporters packed into both the old stands, the Sunday side gave their all and had the experienced Phil Gilchrist stretched on occasions. Ultimately, multiple changes weakened their line-up and fitness played its part, particularly against the youthful Academy players who made up the all-gold Cards? second half squad. Woking started in a determined mood with Goma Lambu and Matt Pattison running at and stretching the defence. Within three minutes Pattison took the ball to the by-line, cut in past the defender into the box to firmly cross for Abdou El Kholti to calmly tap home. Several chances came in the next three minutes, the best squandered by Kim Grant with only the keeper to beat. However, a minute later Matt Gray looped the ball home from close range inside the far post, and it looked as though the floodgates would open. However, some nifty goalkeeping by Nadeem Zaffar and an impressive pacy performance by Khaleel Jaffri up front ensured that the Cards did not have it all their own way. On 16 minutes Jaffri raced beween left back Ashley Quashie-Pownall and central defender Phil Gilchrist to slot an angled shot inches wide of the post. This clearly rattled coach Gilchrist as, under very little pressure, he promptly gave an unnecessary corner away in the next move. For the rest of the half it was Nadeem Zaffar who kept the Cards at bay with several saves, and help from the post, to thwart Marum, Grant and El Kholti. Half-time: Woking 2 Woking and Maybury Sports Club 0 Just after the break the ever-solid Matt Ruby looped a header just over the bar from a Matt Gray cross. Delano Sam-Yorke began to make his strength and presence felt with a mazy run into the box, and two minutes later on 54 minutes he rose at the far post to head firmly home.

The second half saw the usual myriad of changes by both sides ? everyone getting a chance to enjoy the atmosphere. By 70 minutes the Woking side was fully Academy and youth players. Woking made three changes on 55 minutes, with Charlie Moon, Brad Cann and Graham Camp coming on, and once again Moon made an immediate impression with a fierce angled shot from twenty yards rocketing into the net, and a minute later crossing from the right by-line for Brad Cann to head powerfully home.
The Cards, and in particular Sam-Yorke, continued to create chances. There were more changes on 70 minutes and, a minute later, a Charlie Moon free-kick was fumbled by Nadeem Zaffar, but Sam-Yorke was unable to take advantage of the loose ball. However, on 78 minutes he powered into the box, beating three players, for a great solo goal, angling his shot past the stranded keeper, and three minutes later worked space well to fire inches wide. With the game closing, Daniel Sintim slid the ball through from the edge of the box for Chris Dean to slot firmly home. If the heavy downpour dampened a few expensive suits, it failed to dampen the spirits of the visiting players or supporters, who had an evening to remember and, hopefully, the collection for the Hospital in Pakistan raised a few quid as well. I hope that the players listed below are correct even if the changes are not accurate.
