Nationwide Conference

The Cards travel to Burton Albion tomorrow. The Brewers are currently 8th in the table.

LAST SEASON
July 2005 marked the beginning of a new era for Burton Albion as they took up residence in their new Pirelli Stadium, just a stones throw from their previous home of Eton Park where they had played for the previous 47 years. Their first season in the new stadium was undoubtedly the most memorable in the club?s 56 year history. A highest ever finish in the Conference (9th) looked unlikely early in the season but a spectacular FA Cup run, which saw two games against Manchester United, kick started the campaign. After being bottom of the Conference in October, Nigel Clough?s men surged up the table and also witnessed a 24% increase in attendances, the largest in the Conference. Jon Shaw ended up as top scorer, with 11 league goals. Their away form was marginally better than that at home, winning 8 on their travels.

RESULTS SO FAR
Results were indifferent for the Brewers at the start of the season. They won their first match of the season away at Morecambe, thanks to a penalty from Aaron Webster, but then failed to win their next four. Last Friday they beat Altrincham 2-1 at home. Daryl Clare scored both goals, in the 8th and 79th minutes. Away form is slightly better than that at home, having won 8 on the road compared to 7 at the Pirelli Stadium.

THE BURTON SQUAD
Up front Nigel Clough need look no further than the experienced Daryl Clare. The striker joined on deadline day a year ago, after Crawley were beset by financial problems and has scored 13 goals so far this season. He is usually partnered up front by Jon Shaw. The former Sheffield Wednesday forward has been leading goalscorer in his last two seasons and also earned a call-up to the National Game XI squad during the last campaign. Goals also come from the midfield, with inspirational skipper Darren Stride now having netted over 100 goals for the club. He has also represented the England non-league side, and has been captain for more than 6 years. Another influential figure is defender Darren Tinson. He has won promotion with both Macclesfield and Shrewsbury during his career and joined the Brewers in the summer of 2005. Nigel Clough has recently bought in Walsall striker Alex Nicholls on a month?s loan.
