Braintree Town v Woking
Vanarama National League
7.45pm on Tuesday 22 September 2015

The Cards travel to Braintree Town on Tuesday evening in what is usually a testing away trip. Woking remain in the play-off positions, dropping back to 5th place following the 1-0 defeat at home to Cheltenham Town at the weekend. Braintree Town sit in 7th place in the table, just 2 points behind the Cards.

WOKING

Garry Hill was very pleased with the performance against Cheltenham Town on Saturday, despite the narrow defeat to the side who now sit 2nd in the table. Craig Braham-Barrett, who joined on loan from Ebbsfleet on Friday, came in at left back and put in a good performance that earned him the man of the match award. Joey Jones returned from injury, coming off the bench in the second half. It will be a familiar place on Tuesday for striker Dan Holman, who spent two seasons at Braintree Town scoring 24 goals in 69 league matches.

BRAINTREE TOWN

It’s a new era at Braintree, with Alan Devonshire having departed to manage Maidenhead United. Ambitious new manager Danny Cowley, who enjoyed great success with Concord Rangers, taking them three levels higher to the Conference South, has been very happy to retain the nucleus of last year’s squad but has also made some useful-looking additions. So, there are still the familiar names of skipper Kenny Davis, striker Sean Marks and others such as Sam Habergham, Simeon Akinola, Mitch Brundle, Jordan Cox, Chez Isaac and in-form winger, Dan Sparkes. Additions include centre back Matt Fry, following Cowley from Concord Rangers, and his defensive partner Mark Phillips; midfielders Alex Woodyard and Matt Paine; and striker Michael Cheek, a top goalscorer with Chelmsford City last season in the Conference South. 19 year-old defender Tom Dallison is on loan from Brighton, having had a spell with Dartford last season. He was brought in as cover for the injured Matt Fry. Jordan Chiedozie is a former Concord Rangers striker on loan from Cambridge United, while Anthony Edgar is a youngster on loan from West Ham, who came off the bench to inspire the Iron’s win over Welling United.

Braintree started the season with defeats away to Chester and at home to Lincoln City but then went on an excellent run, picking up a point against Tranmere and gaining successive wins over Bromley, Southport and Welling United. They were defeated at home to Aldershot Town, but the Iron then won away at Kidderminster Harriers. Draws against Barrow and Dover Athletic followed, before a 4-0 win away to Altrincham on Saturday.

By coach

The Cards Trust coach leaves Kingfield at 4.30pm. £18 members, £23 non-members, with accompanied U16s (maximum two per adult) at £9/£12. Ring (01483 772470) or email (shop@wokingfc.co.uk) to reserve your place.

By car

Leave the M25 at J27 and head north on the M11. Leave at J8A and head east on the A120 for 16 miles until you reach the Galleys Corner roundabout, recognisable by the large McDonalds logo. Take the first exit towards Braintree College. This is Cressing Road and the ground is hidden behind new flats (called Iron View, as the higher ones get a free view of the ground) on the left-hand side, 0.7 miles from the roundabout. Look out for the Orange Tree pub on the right-hand side and then take the next turning on the left into Clockhouse Way. There is a small road sign pointing the way on the right-hand side of the road.

By train

Trains take about an hour from Stratford (which can be reached via the Jubilee Line from Waterloo). Braintree Station is about a 15-minute walk from the ground, although there is a taxi rank outside the station. Possible trains and arrival times are: 16.42 (17.39), 17.29 (18.28) and 18.09 (19.19). On the way back you’d want to make a quick getaway from the ground to catch the 22.00 train, which reaches Stratford at 22.52. The next train after that, at 22.56, wouldn’t get you to Stratford till 23.57.

The ground is about a 15-minute brisk walk from the station. Exit the station and turn right along the Station Approach. Cross Rose Hill at the pedestrian crossing into Railway Road. Turn right at the traffic lights into Trinovantian Way. This becomes Manor Street and then Lakes Road. After the 'Sportsmans' Snooker Club turn left into Chapel Hill. At triangular junction bear right into Cressing Road and then turn right into Clockhouse Way. Soon after the right-angled bend there is an unmarked road to the right. The ground is at the end of this cul de sac.

ADMISSION PRICES

The Iron operate a differential pricing system for matches. On the assumption that this match is Category B, admission prices will be:

Adults (seats) £17
Concessions £12
Adult (ground) £16
OAP (ground) £11
U16 (ground) £6
U11 (ground) £4

LAST TIME OUT

Woking 1 Braintree Town 0
29 November 2014

The Cards ground out a hard-fought three points to leap to fourth in the table thanks to a first-half strike from John Goddard.

The Cards were missing the suspended Joe McNerney and the injured Jake Cole and Scott Rendell. They welcomed back Ross Worner, joining on loan, and he had to make a number of important saves, in particular from Kenny Davis. Profiting from a ‘man of the match’ performance from Josh Payne in midfield, Woking enjoyed the majority of possession but couldn’t make it pay till the 38th minute when John Goddard seized on a loose ball and lashed it into the bottom corner.

The Cards spurned several opportunities early in the second half to make their hold on the game more comfortable and had to endure a torrid final ten minutes or so as the Iron bombarded the Woking defence with crosses and throw-ins but they held firm to record their first clean sheet in six games.

Woking: Ross Worner, Chris Arthur, Mike Cestor, James Clarke, Joey Jones, John Goddard, Keiran Murtagh (Theo Lewis 64), Josh Payne, Kevin Betsy, Jack Marriott (Giuseppe Sole 67), Dean Morgan (Scott Rendell 85)

Unused substitutes: Andy Little, Adam Newton

Goal: Goddard (38)

Braintree Town: Nick Hamann, Mitch Brundle, Alan Massey, Remy Clerima, Sam Habergham, James Mulley, Chez Isaac (Jordan Cox 84), Kenny Davis, Simeon Akinola, Sean Marks, Charlie Strutton (Dan Sparkes 56)

Unused substitutes: Carl Pentney, Matt Paine, Dan Walker

Attendance: 1,622

COMING UP

The Cards are away at Dover Athletic at 7.45pm this Friday (25 September). The game has been re-scheduled from the following day because it is being shown live on BT Sport. The Cards’ next home game is on Saturday 3 October when they welcome Southport.
