Ebbsfleet United vs Woking
Vanarama National League
Saturday 21st December 2019

Woking will meet Ebbsfleet United for the fourth time this season on Saturday as the Cards look to finally break their duck, both by registering their first win against the Fleet this campaign, but also by claiming a first three points at Stonebridge Road in the club’s history.

It’s been almost two weeks since the Cards’ win over Hartlepool United elevated Alan Dowson’s side back to fourth in the National League table – making it 13 points out of a possible 18 across the last six league games. So, whilst there was disappointment in last weekend’s defeat at Kingstonian in the FA Trophy, eyes remain firmly on a potential play-off tilt as we move into the second-half of the league season. Whilst few expected to see Woking in the top seven come Christmas – and even fewer probably expect the Cards to stay there – a big three points this weekend will ensure that the club’s fate is very much in its’ own hands as we enter 2020.

It’s been a highly challenging season for Ebbsfleet. Off the back of widely publicised financial problems that impacted upon their previous campaign, as well as their recruitment this summer, they now appear to have been stabilised at least by manager Kevin Watson who replaced Garry Hill in October. Whilst they remain in the relegation zone, with 23 points from their 25 games, their recent form has been better with only one defeat in the last eight league games – albeit with four of those games ending in a draw. They are currently three points adrift of safety in a congested bottom-half of the table, where only four points separate the bottom seven.

Please get along if you can for this relatively local festive fixture and cheer on the team!

Woking Team News

The Cards have limited options for rotation following the recent departures of several loan players. In defence, Dowse will be hoping for a positive update on the fitness of Moussa Diarra, with either Nathan Collier or Manny Parry available to play alongside Ben Gerring should the Frenchman not make it. Further forward, Shaun Donnellan was absent last weekend, but will surely return to a starting role if he’s available, whilst Jamar Loza is also available again after suspension.

Ebbsfleet United Team News

In their last league outing, a 1-1 draw with Eastleigh, the Fleet started with Jordan Holmes in goal. The former Bournemouth academy player and Australia Under-23 international took the gloves from long-time number one Nathan Ashmore earlier this season. In defence was Marvel Ekpiteta, on loan from Newport County and part of the Hungerford Town team last season, Jack King, part of Woking’s promotion winning team in 2012, Tyler Cordner, on loan from Bournemouth, plus Jamie Grimes, a recent addition from Macclesfield Town.

In midfield was Alfie Egan, a summer signing from AFC Wimbledon, the dangerous Myles Weston who always offers a threat from set-pieces, plus another two former Woking men, Josh Payne and Frankie Sutherland. Yet another familiar face, Gozie Ugwu, started up front alongside Stevenage loanee Alex Reid.
