Woking Football Club was deeply saddened to hear that John Mortimore passed away this week.
John made his Woking debut in 1953, aged 18, and went on to make 130 league & cup appearances for the Cards, scoring 26 goals. Along with his brother Charlie, he represented England at amateur level whilst at Woking, with his first cap coming in a match against Wales in February 1957.
Before the 1957/58 season commenced, John signed as a professional for Chelsea, having already represented the Blues three times the previous couple of seasons whilst still a Woking player. The centre-half played nearly 280 games for Chelsea, winning the League Cup in 1965 before moving to Queens Park Rangers in September that year for a fee of £8000.
After his playing career John moved into management, first in Greece, and then Portsmouth in 1973. John had two spells as manager of Benfica, winning the Primeira Liga twice, in 76/77 & 86/87, and the Portuguese Cup in 86 & 87.
John also had various roles at Southampton, as caretaker manager in 1994, and as their club president.
Woking Football Club sends our condolences to John's family at this sad time, and we will be honouring him before our match against Stockport County on Saturday.
