Farnborough vs Woking
Pre-Season Friendly
Tuesday 3rd August 2021

Woking will make the short trip to play long-time local rivals Farnborough on Tuesday evening as the Cards continue their pre-season preparations in Hampshire.

Alan Dowson’s side have enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign thus far with Saturday’s spectacular comeback win over Chelsea’s Under-23s making it three wins in a row. The home side were unfortunate to trail 3-0 at half-time to their Premier League opponents, but goals from Moussa Diarra, Tahvon Campbell and a Max Kretzschmar penalty drew them level, before Inih Effiong struck a well-taken winner with eight minutes to go. Dowse has continued to add to his squad in the interim, securing the signing of exciting Birmingham City midfielder Kane Thompson-Sommers on loan until January, with the 20-year-old now in line to feature on Tuesday. He joins an already well stocked midfield and will be competing for a starting role alongside Rohan Ince, Tom Champion, Solomon Nwabuokei and Tommy Block.

Farnborough currently play in the Southern League Premier Division South, the seventh tier of English football, two leagues below Woking. They were 18th out of 20 teams at the start of last season before it was subsequently cancelled, having won one and lost six of their eight games, conceding 16 goals in the process. The previous season they were 12th out of 22 teams before the pandemic intervened. In their last fully completed campaign they finished ninth.

This is Farnborough’s penultimate pre-season friendly before their league season starts on 14th August at home to Walton Casuals. Thus far they have beaten Spelthorne Sports, Fleet Town and Cobham, drawn with Staines Town, Slough Town and Maidenhead United, and lost 7-5 to Aldershot Town. Their current squad includes former Woking youngster Reggie Young, on loan from Hemel Hempstead Town, former Cards defender Richard Orlu, and experienced ex-Ebbsfleet, Billericay and Dagenham midfielder Sam Deering. Their manager is Spencer Day who has been in charge since 2011.

The last competitive meeting between the two teams was in the FA Trophy in 2012 when Woking won 7-0 – the goals coming from Kevin Betsy, Jayden Stockley (2), Billy Knott (2), Brett Williams and Gavin McCallum.
