Woking vs Dagenham & Redbridge
Vanarama National League
Tuesday 5th October 2021

Woking will be looking to continue the momentum from one of the most memorable weeks in the club’s recent history when they host Dagenham & Redbridge at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

After the disappointment of defeat to Eastleigh ten days ago, Alan Dowson’s side responded in perfect fashion with a 3-1 win at home to Chesterfield and backed that up with a first ever win over Notts County, where goals from Inih Effiong, Moussa Diarra and another brace from the red hot Tahvon Campbell made for an emphatic 4-1 scoreline. They now host second-place Dagenham, who after flying under the radar of the big-spenders over the summer, have assembled a strong team capable of challenging at the top-end of the table.

Dowse has a couple of injury concerns heading into the game. Jordan Maguire-Drew, who missed Saturday’s trip to Meadow Lane, is a doubt with a knee injury against his former club. Meanwhile, striker George Oakley is likely to be out for several weeks after sustaining an injury against Chesterfield last week. The boss named an unchanged team on Saturday but could be tempted to mix things up after the impact of substitute Tyreke Johnson, who caused County plenty of problems with his pace and direct running, replacing Tom Champion. Jamar Loza will also be aiming for his first appearance of the season. The forward was an unused substitute last time out.

Opposition Watch

Dagenham have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and have continued the momentum from their positive run in the second-half of last season which almost saw them sneak into the play-offs. The Daggers won seven and lost just one of their last 10 games to finish 12th, nine points adrift of the top seven, and backed that up with five wins and a draw in their first six games of the new campaign. They fell to a first defeat of the season at Wrexham last month before a surprise 3-2 home loss to Altrincham last time out. They remain the league’s top scorers with 24 goals in nine matches.

A quiet summer saw them bring in four new players, including striker Josh Walker from Barnet, who has started the season in fine form with five goals. They have also added full-back Sam Ling from Leyton Orient and defensive midfielder Ryley Scott from Portuguese side S.C. Farense. They also kept hold of star striker Paul McCallum who has six goals so far this year. Their former Woking contingent includes midfielder Matt Robinson and defender Joey Jones.

Manager Daryl McMahon is approaching two years in charge having taken over in January 2020. The former Stevenage and Farnborough midfielder is perhaps best known for his four years in charge of Ebbsfleet United, where he guided the club to promotion to the National League and reached a play-off semi-final, losing to eventual winners Tranmere Rovers. He also had a brief spell in charge of Macclesfield Town towards the end of 2019.
