Saturday 22nd January 2022

Woking will be hoping to make the most of their extended winter break as they return to National League action against Wealdstone on Saturday, almost three weeks after their last fixture.

A late postponement against King’s Lynn Town and the club’s early exist from the FA Trophy has led to a quiet January for Alan Dowson’s side, who haven’t played competitively since derby day disappointment against Aldershot Town at the start of the month. The out-of-form Cards, who have taken just 10 points from their last 14 league games, have slipped down to 14th in the league table, still 13 points clear of the bottom three, but with one eye over their shoulder following the improved form of Aldershot, Southend United, and Maidenhead United.

In team news, midfielder Solomon Nwabuokei remains suspended, as he waits to serve his one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards in the league this season. Meanwhile, defender Tommy Block has joined National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough on loan. Otherwise, Dowse should have a full-strength squad to pick from, along with potentially one or two new arrivals to be announced later Friday.

Opposition Watch

Wealdstone currently sit 18th in the league table, with 24 points from their 21 games, four points fewer than the Cards having played one fixture less – and nine clear of the relegation places. Last Saturday they ended a run of five straight defeats in all competitions, coming from behind to beat bottom club Dover Athletic 2-1, with Connor Stevens and Ashley Charles scoring the goals. It was the Stones first win since beating Dover 3-2 in mid-November. Since then, they’d lost to Stockport County, Bromley, FC Halifax Town, Boreham Wood, and seventh-tier Needham Market in the FA Trophy.

Manager Stuart Maynard has been in charge since March 2021 and won on his last visit to the Laithwaite Community Stadium, claiming a 4-2 victory on the final day of last season. The dangerman in his squad is striker Josh Umerah, who has eight league goals this season, and scored in the reverse fixture on the opening day of this season. Former Woking players Jack Cook and Charlie Cooper also both played last time out.
