Altrincham v Woking
Vanarama National League
Saturday 10th August 2024
15:00 Kick-Off

Woking kick off their National League campaign with a trip to the J Davidson Stadium, as last season’s play-off semi finalists await.

Michael Doyle will be hoping that decisions to rest the likes of Dale Gorman, Dion Kelly-Evans and Lewis Walker against Gillingham have paid off, and that his side will head up the M6 with a clean bill of health.

Opposition Watch
Phil Parkinson’s Altrincham have earned a reputation for being an attractive passing outfit, and after years of steady progress following promotion in 2020, the Robins broke into the play-offs in some style last season, finishing 4th.

Following Gateshead’s disqualification from the play-offs, Alty were given a bye into the semi final, where they faced Bromley at Hayes Lane, losing 3-1 to the eventual play-off winners.

It’s been a relatively quiet summer barring the enormous elephant in the room: Chris Conn-Clarke. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman bagged 22 goals in 46 games last season, earning plenty of interest across the pyramid. In the end, it was League One side Peterborough United who paid a big six-figure fee for his services. No natural replacement has been sourced, but that is very understandable considering the quality of Conn-Clarke, as Alty have reinforced in other areas.

Impressive right back Tylor Golden departed FC Halifax Town to land in WA15; Woking fans may remember his sublime goal to give the Shaymen all three points last season at the Laithwaite, whilst other additions include lower league hitman Lucas Weaver and Hartlepool midfielder Tom Crawford.

Expectations for Alty will naturally be lower than last season, but make no mistake about it, this is still a very good National League side.

Last Time Out
A memorable goal from Ricky Korboa gave Woking their third win in three games to give their survival hopes a big lift back in early March with just seconds on the clock.

Alty were victorious by a 3-2 margin in the reverse fixture last August despite goals from Scott Cuthbert and Reece Grego-Cox.

Since 2005, the sides have faced off 20 times, with Woking winning ten times, Alty six times and four draws.
