WOKING SPORTING FACILITIES GET THE THUMBS UP FROM THE OLYMPICS

A number of Woking sporting venues have been given the seal of approval by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and will be included in London?s 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.

This means that five facilities in Woking will be published in a guide that will be given to all of the competing countries taking part in the 2012 Olympics, so that they can decide if they would like to use the facilities in their pre-Olympic build-up.

Last year, various clubs and venues were approached by Woking Borough Council in order to ascertain if they would like to be used as a pre-Olympic training camp. In order to do this, the clubs worked with the Council, who had to fill out a form listing their facilities, including physio and medical facilities and nearby hospital and transport links.

This form was sent to the LOCOG, who decided if the facility met their criteria. Woking Leisure Centre (for fencing), Woking Athletic Club, Woking Gymnastics Club (for rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics and trampolining), Woking Amateur Boxing Club and Woking Football Club were all successful and will be included in the guide.

Competing countries can decide if they would like to use these facilities in their pre-Olympic build-up, either a couple of years before the Olympic Games or in the months leading up to the event.

Cllr Michael Smith, Woking Borough Council?s Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-being Development, said: ?This is excellent news for Woking and clearly demonstrates what fantastic facilities we have here in the Borough. Congratulations to Woking Leisure Centre and all of the other clubs and organisations that have been successful in their application to be included in the 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.?
