WOKING v WHYTELEAFE (REDUCED ADMISSION PRICES!)
Surrey Senior Cup Semi-Final
7.45pm on Wednesday 26 March 2008
The Cards still have a chance of getting some silverware this season in the shape of the Surrey Senior Cup, so come on down to Kingfield tomorrow (Wednesday) evening to cheer them on. Frank will no doubt put out a strong team but will also want to give a start to those first-team squad players who?ve not had quite as much time on the pitch as some of their colleagues. It is still not clear who our opponents would be if we beat Whyteleafe. Although Kingstonian beat Tooting and Mitcham in the other semi-final 4-0, it is claimed that the Ks fielded an ineligible player.
There will be some weary legs among the Woking players as they prepare for their fourth game in eight days, but they will be boosted by the ? admittedly somewhat fortuitous ? win over Salisbury City on Easter Monday, which surely finally put paid to any lingering worries that we might get drawn into a relegation scrap. With almost all the first team squad having had time on the pitch recently, it isn?t easy to predict Wednesday?s line-up, but Nick Gindre will no doubt feature in goal and Matt Ruby will play some part in defence. (Where?s Jerome Maledon been, though?)
The Leafe are managed by ex-Crystal Palace striker Dave Swindlehurst, who joined the club in December 2006. The squad largely comprises players with non-League experience with clubs like Carshalton and Tooting and Mitcham. The regular keeper is ex-Crawley stopper Rob Tolfrey. In midfield is captain Ali Reeve, described on the Club?s website as ?remarkably erudite off the pitch for a complete beast on it?! Be warned! A midfield partner is former Palace youth team captain Robbie Smith, whilst Sean Rivers is a promising striker.
SEASON SO FAR
Whyteleafe sit in mid-table in the Ryman League Division One South, the same league as Kingstonian and Tooting and Mitcham. They have won 16 league games, drawn 5 and lost 15, with 51 goals scored and 49 conceded. The Leafe defeated Ashford Town 2-1 away on Good Friday. Their home game against Chipstead on Easter Monday was postponed.
SURREY SENIOR CUP
The Cards have won this competition 10 times, most recently in the 2003/04 season when they beat a good young Sutton United side 2-1 at Imber Court, with goals coming from Amos Foyewa and Steve Ferguson. (It was interesting to note that Ashley Bayes was preferred in goal to Adriano Basso that day!) The U?s side included Jon Nurse and Nicky Bailey.
Woking won away 4-0 at Croydon in Round 2 of this year?s competition, with goals coming from Gez Sole, Liam Marum, Joe Gatting (penalty) and Jay Gasson. In Round 3 the Cards had an unconvincing 2-1 home win over Walton Casuals, with both goals coming from Liam Marum. In the Quarter-Final the Cards ran out 3-1 winners against Sutton United. Gez Sole opened the scoring in the 10th minute but the U?s equalised before half-time. Marvin Morgan scored an insouciant second goal minutes after coming on as a substitute early in the second half but the contest wasn?t over till Jason Norville scored the third gaol two minutes from time, stooping to head in a corner from close range.
Whyteleafe had an excellent victory over AFC Wimbledon on penalties in Round 2 before crushing Molesey 5-0 away in the following round. In the Quarter-Final they beat Scott Steele?s and Lloyd Wye?s Guildford City 1-0. In the other semi-final, played a couple of weeks ago, Kingstonian romped home 4-0 at holders Tooting and Mitcham but it was then claimed that the Ks fielded an ineligible player. The Surrey County FA have still to adjudicate. The final is scheduled to be played on 6 May at Imber Court.
Juniors (U16) and Students: ?2
Please note that the Leslie Gosden Stand will not be open for this game.
Come on, you Cards!
