Cards looking to cure 'away blues'

Sutton United vs Woking
Vanarama National League
Tuesday 6th March 2018

The Cards will be looking to record their first league victory away from home since October when they travel to our near-neighbours, promotion chasing Sutton United.

With Saturday’s game at Maidenhead United having fallen foul of the weather, the Cards are yet to play since picking up a hugely credible 0-0 draw with high-flying Boreham Wood the previous week, a game which has since been overshadowed by the ultimately career-ending injury to new signing Damon Lathrope. A fundraising campaign is already underway for Damon and we would urge you to donate if you can. Unfortunately, whilst the Cards’ home record has been looking up, they have continued to struggle on the road, where recent defeats at Hartlepool and Ebbsfleet have seen Anthony Limbrick’s side slowly slide back down the league table. There are plenty of reasons for optimism however with the Cards having beaten Sutton at the Laithwaite earlier in the season and, whilst we will certainly need to recreate that kind of dogged performance to stand a chance here, the team has demonstrated that they are more than capable of beating the best in the division.

Sutton have had an excellent season thus far, building on last year’s mid-table finish and admirable FA Cup run, they currently sit in second place with 63 points – five behind leaders Macclesfield Town who, incidentally, the Cards have already managed to beat away from home this season. Their last game saw a comprehensive 4-0 victory over lowly Guiseley, although their recent form has been patchy, having struggled to overcome Torquay United (3-2), drawn with Barrow (1-1), and been knocked out of the FA Trophy by Brackley Town. That being said, they are unbeaten in the league since the turn of the year and will no doubt prove stern opposition, particularly on their 3G surface.

We urge all supporters planning on travelling to the game at Gander Green Lane to check travel warnings and conditions before setting off in the aftermath of the recent bad weather; we wish all those who do make the journey a very safe trip.

Woking Team News

Lathrope’s sad issues aside, the Cards growing injury list will be a worry, with long-term absentees Louis Ramsay, Lazar Stojsavljevic and Bobson Bawling all still sidelined. Jordan Wynter also remains a doubt having not played since December but is expected to be fit soon. If the versatile defender does miss out then it will be between Joey Jones and Richard Orlu to fight it out for the central defensive spot alongside Josh Staunton, who was selected in the latest England C squad this week, with Matt Young and Nathan Ralph likely to continue on the flanks.

In midfield, Chez Isaac is the most obvious replacement for Lathrope, although Jones could also push forward to make way for a returning Orlu. Declan Appau could provide another, slightly more attacking option, whilst Fabio Saraiva could also be looking to make a rare start in a season heavily disrupted by injury problems of his own.

Up front, Reece Grego-Cox should be fit after being taken off early in the second-half last weekend as a precaution. He could again figure alongside Anthony Cook and Louie Theophanous, although the Cards have plenty of options with Jason Banton and Jonny Edwards also waiting in the wings.

Sutton Team News

The U’s hugely experienced manager Paul Doswell has assembled a very strong squad that has thrived this season, with further additions having been made in recent weeks to aid their promotion push, they now have a large pool of talent to choose from.

Against Guiseley, Doswell selected Jamie Butler in goal, a former Braintree stopper who was with Hemel Hempstead last season; a back four including two former Woking players, Terell Thomas (on loan from Wigan) and Aswad Thomas, plus Louis John and captain Jamie Collins; a midfield pairing of Kenny Davis and the experienced Simon Walton, who has played for the likes of Leeds, QPR and Plymouth; out wide were Kieron Cadogan and Tom Bolarinwa, recently signed from Grimsby Town, with Craig Eastmond supporting the on loan Byron Harrison – who was one of the league’s top players with Barrow last season.

They have plenty of options on the bench including midfielder Harry Beautyman, who has had spells with Peterborough and Stevenage, forwards Tommy Wright, Ross Stearn and Adam Coombes and defender Simon Downer. Former Woking players Ross Lafayette and Moses Emmanuel are currently out on loan at Maidstone and Maidenhead respectively.

Last Time Out

Woking 2-0 Sutton United (Saturday 16 September 2017 – Vanarama National League)

In arguably the most memorable performance of Woking’s season thus far, the Cards toppled the then league leaders thanks to a brace from Regan Charles-Cook, which at the time took them to within two points of the top of the table. The hosts rode their luck at times and had goalkeeper Nathan Baxter to thank for several top-class saves in the first-half, but their determination and resilience brought its reward, as the man on loan from Charlton kept his cool and picked his spot for the second after Inih Effiong had seen his initial effort saved.
