Woking FC update for fans

3:20pm, Thu 26th Mar 2020
Firstly we would want to thank all fans for their ongoing support – it is much appreciated. We realise that we are all facing big challenges at this time and hope that, whether you are still working, helping in the community or in isolation, you and your loved ones are well. In particular we would highlight all the heroic key workers who are doing so much for the rest of us – thank you.

The stadium is now shut unless there are necessary events such as the Blood Transfusion service. We have also been cooperating with Woking Borough Council and the statutory services to make the stadium facilities available as they need them, which has been appreciated. Staff are working from home and we are assessing the viability of ‘furlough’ options for some where 80% of salaries will be paid by the government to reduce the significant financial impact the suspension of the season has caused.

The team management are communicating regularly with the players and providing personalised training and support plans. With the closure of the stadium Dowse’s update has, sadly, been suspended for several weeks. No doubt he is storing everything he wants to say so we can expect a three hour marathon when Dowse resumes!

Geoff Chapple, the club's football secretary, is communicating with the FA, the National League and other clubs on a daily basis. While we totally appreciate the difficult times and the dilemmas the league is facing there is considerable frustration that so little is clear. At this moment we don’t know if, when or whether the season will resume (national newspaper reports are, we understand, premature) or be declared null and void. In particular, there is also no news on any financial support being given from the FA or other sources. Some clubs have already taken drastic action and it is our understanding others are imminently facing huge challenges to meet bills. We have budgeted conservatively, recruited players prudently and were already looking at possible cost saving measures for next season to maximise the playing budget. However every club will be facing big challenges with no income and contracted expenditure commitments.

The Club Board is communicating constantly and meeting (via conference call) every week to keep on top of all the bewildering change. While we had already done considerable work on cash flow and necessary economies until we get this clarity about support from the League we cannot budget or be clear with fans regarding the level of support that will be needed. We will be addressing these matters as soon as we hear; thank you for your patience.

Woking Borough Council has suspended all committees including planning. The next Planning Committee date would be in early June but obviously that can be subject to change.

We will update regularly as things become clearer; if there are areas you think the club can help in the community at this time please do get in touch and we will do what we can.

Stay safe
