Woking vs West Bromwich Albion
Pre-Season Friendly
Friday 16th July 2021

Woking and West Bromwich Albion will meet for the first time in more than 30 years on Friday as the Cards host the Baggies in a pre-season friendly at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

The game, which celebrates the anniversary of the home side's famous 4-2 win over Albion in the FA Cup in 1991, will also act as the curtain raiser for a new and much anticipated season at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. Despite less than two months having passed since the Cards completed their final fixture of last season, a 4-2 defeat at home to Wealdstone, the club has undergone a transformative summer, completing a return to full-time football, starting work at a new training ground, launching a new adidas kit, and making strong progress with a makeover to the playing squad. Manager Alan Dowson will be hoping that all that hard work starts to come together on the pitch later this week, as preparations begin in earnest ahead of the new campaign.

West Brom are, much like Woking, coming into the game off the back of a challenging season and one which saw them relegated from the Premier League after just one season back in the top flight of English football. Manager Sam Allardyce has departed and been replaced by the former Barnsley boss Valérien Ismaël, a former Crystal Palace and Bayern Munich defender during a 15-year playing career, but now at just 45 one of the most exciting young managers in the country, with the Frenchman guiding the relegation-tipped Tykes to a fifth-place finish in the Championship last season. The Baggies, whose league season starts just three weeks from Friday away to AFC Bournemouth, are also playing their first pre-season game, but did have a behind closed doors match with Salford City on Tuesday in which more than 30 of their players featured.

The Cards could have several new signings on show including the returning Kyran Lofthouse and Tyreke Johnson, both signed permanently after successful loan spells, as well as popular former players Inih Effiong and Joe McNerney who re-join the club after three and six year absences respectively. Dowse has also added defender/midfielder Tom Champion, anchor man Rohan Ince, box to box midfielder Solomon Nwabuokei, and forward George Oakley. Academy players Louis Evans and Jake Rumble have also joined a healthy contingent of former youth players which also includes Leo Hamblin, Selim Saied and Sam Evans.

West Brom - Team News

A huge number of players have left the Hawthorns this summer on free transfers, most notably the likes of Hal Robson-Kanu, Branislav Ivanovic, and Kamil Grosicki. There has only been a couple of new additions for them thus far: defender Matthew Clarke, who joins on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion after two years with Derby County, former Leeds United and Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt, who followed his boss from Oakwell, and Chelsea youngster Quevin Castro on a permanent deal. One former Woking loanee who could play some part is defender Saul Shotton who made 18 appearances for the Cards last season.
