Sheerwater vs Woking
Pre-Season Friendly
Saturday 24th July 2021

Woking will make the short trip to play Sheerwater on Saturday in their second pre-season friendly game. The match will also commemorate the opening of the home side’s new ground, with the Sheers having previously been ground sharing at the Laithwaite Community Stadium since August 2018.

The Cards put in an encouraging performance last Friday, eventually losing 1-0 to a strong West Bromwich Albion side which included a host of players with Premier League experience, with Kenneth Zohore’s late penalty the difference between the two sides. Manager Alan Dowson started the game with what could be close to his first-choice side: a back four of Kyran Lofthouse, Josh Casey, Joe McNerney and Moussa Diarra ahead of goalkeeper Craig Ross, a midfield shield of Rohan Ince and Tom Champion, with Tyreke Johnson and Max Kretzschmar supporting Inih Effiong up front. The final spot in the team was taken by a trialist in the absence of Jamar Loza. The second-half side was predominately made up of academy players and trialists, although there was also an impressive display from debutant Solomon Nwabuokei. Dowse could take a similar approach to this game to see how his new look side adapt in a game for which they’ll be heavy favourites.

Sheerwater currently play in the Combined Counties Premier Division South, the ninth tier of English football, four divisions below the Cards. In their last fully completed season, which ended in 2019, they won promotion from the Combined Counties Division One as champions. Their last two seasons have not finished due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2020 they were 16th of 21 teams after 30 games, whilst last season they were 10th of 20 teams after 13 games. Other teams in the same division include neighbours Guildford City and recent pre-season opponents Fleet Town.

Tickets

This game is all-ticket and there are currently only a handful of tickets remaining. The cost is £5.00 for adults and free for under-16s. Doors open at 11:00am with a legends game, starting at midday, preceding the first-team game.

The ground is the Eastwood Centre (GU21 5RL), with parking available at Sheerwater Rec (GU21 5NS).
