Woking 2-0 Sutton United
Pre-Season Friendly
25th July 2023

Woking played higher opposition at home for the second and last time this pre season when they entertained Sutton United on Tuesday night.

Darren Sarll's squad was rotated from the side that started against Welling, with the likes of Jim Kellermann and Rhys Browne back in the starting lineup, with Rohan Ince back on the bench after missing the game at Park View Road.

Woking began in the ascendency and after a Sam Habergham long throw was nodded into the path of Scott Cuthbert, the ball fell to Reece Grego-Cox, whose spectacular overhead kick attempt landed safely in the hands of Jack Rose in the U's goal.

And the Cards took the lead 11 minutes in, albeit in scrappy circumstances. Good work between Browne and Dennon Lewis saw the ball fall to Kellermann just inside the box, and his deflected low shot gave Rose no chance.

Confidence was flowing through the home side, and superb link up between Manny Oyeleke and Kellermann saw Browne testing the keeper at his near post. Another chance with 35 minutes gone saw the lively Grego-Cox beating the offside trap, but a good stop from Rose kept the striker out.

A minute later, a cross from the right hand side evaded the away side's defence, but Matt Robinson couldn't quite convert from close range. The U's were feeling the pressure, and on the stroke of half time, a timid back pass zipped past the feet of Rose, who just about managed to kick the ball away for a throw in.

There was still time for Grego-Cox to force Rose into an outstanding save from a Habergham corner, before the half time whistle went. Woking were excellent, their opponents had yet to find any rhythm, and the scoreline could have been heavier than 1-0 in the Cards' favour.

Half time: Woking 1-0 Sutton United

After Sutton made two changes at half time, it was clear that manager Matt Gray knew things had to change, however, Woking began the second half the way they had ended the first. A neat cross from Habergham was touched down well by Grego-Cox, but his shot on the turn was gathered by Rose.

With multiple substitutions being made by both sides, the game went into a bit of a lull, with rhythm hard to find, but when Lee Angol finally broke the offside trap on 70 minutes, superb work from Cuthbert and Taylor nullified any possible shooting opportunity.

The introductions of Padraig Amond and Ricky Korboa onto the pitch almost made an immediate impact, as the Irishman found the winger over the top, but his low effort flew wide of the near post.

Woking put the seal on an excellent performance with one minute left, when a superb cross from Nana Boateng was flicked into the bottom corner by Amond, past the despairing dive of Rose.

Full time came shortly after, with a dominant Woking performance rewarded with two goals and a clean sheet. With all of the squad getting minutes, this was a great run out for Sarll's men, who play Havant & Waterlooville in their last friendly on Saturday.
