Woking Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Joe Day.

The experienced goalkeeper, 32, joins the Cardinals on a season-long loan from League Two Newport County.

Day started his career at Crystal Palace before moving to Rushden & Diamonds in 2007. After loan spells at Brackley and Harrow, and 33 Conference Premier appearances, the ‘keeper moved to Peterborough United in 2011.

Loan spells at Alfreton and Eastbourne came before League One football with the Posh in 2013/14, winning the Football League Trophy. In the summer of 2014, Joe first joined Newport County on loan before making the switch permanent shortly after.

Day featured against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City for Newport County in the Emirates FA Cup with fellow Cardinals, Padraig Amond, and Robbie Willmott. In 2019, Championship Cardiff City came calling for Joe and loan spells at AFC Wimbledon and Bristol Rovers in League One followed.

The ’keeper re-joined Newport from the Bluebirds ahead of the 2021/22 season, and across seven seasons made 258 League Two appearances for the club.

“As very similar with the last few signings, Joe is someone we have waited for to ensure that we give ourselves the best opportunity of getting those last decisions right,” said Manager Darren Sarll. “This was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and an opportunity to have the best strength in the goalkeeping department the Club has maybe ever had.

”It fell within the resources that we had left, and that made it a no-brainer to agree to bring Joe in. He is very easy to deal with and was easy to convince, and showed an energy that he wanted to come and help the football club achieve something great potentially.

“When you combine that with his career, the qualities he has, the type of goalkeeper he is, and the way Will and Joe will complement each other, it just goes to show the progress the club has made in its ability to recruit these serial-EFL players that have shown throughout their careers their competency and an elite level of performance.

“This will create so much internal competition, and that is the dynamic that any side that tries to have a winning season needs to subscribe to, to a competitive squad that attempts to get the best out of each and every player,” Sarll added.
