York City 2-0 Woking
Vanarama National League
13th April 2024
Michael Doyle made three changes from the side victorious over Dagenham & Redbridge last week, with Timi Odusina and Tunji Akinola both back from injury and straight into the starting eleven. They replaced the injured Alan Judge and Dion Kelly-Evans, who was ill. The other change was a straight swap as Charley Kendall replaced Reece Grego-Cox up front.
In front of a sell-out crowd at the LNER Community Stadium, Woking kicked off towards the South Stand, and started well. Ricky Korboa nabbed the ball off keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy, but fired just wide of the near post, before a corner just hit Scott Cuthbert unmarked at the back post.
York responded with a swift counter attack with ten minutes gone. A sumptuous ball into Maz Kouhyar was touched down beautifully by the winger, but his finish was wayward and no trouble for Jaaskelainen. Another break, this time down the right hand side after Dipo Akinyemi fed Marvin Armstrong, saw the latter fire wide.
With half an hour gone, Will Jaaskelainen was called into action for the first time when Danny Amos slid in Billy Chadwick, but the Finn was out quickly to smother the shot. A big chance on 36 minutes saw Kouhyar find Akinyemi unmarked inside the box, but the striker was unable to find the target with his header.
There was still time for Amos to fire agonisingly across goal, but it was goalless at the break. York the stronger side for the last 20 minutes of the half, but the Cards held firm.
Half-time: York City 0-0 Woking
York started the second half with the same tempo they finished the first with. Three minutes into the half, Lenell John-Lewis headed just over from a free kick delivery. But York got the breakthrough just shy of the hour mark, when a low finish from Chadwick found the bottom corner.
Despite Michael Doyle bringing on all three subs, York doubled their lead after 73 minutes thanks to a superb strike from Akinyemi. The forward let fly from the edge of the box after great build up play, finding the top corner.
And the Minstermen were able to see the game out comfortably to secure a crucial three points. For the Cards, it’s a reminder that they’re not out of this relegation fight yet.
