Woking v Lingfield
Surrey Senior Cup 1st Round
7.45pm on Monday 14 October 2013

The Cards begin this season’s Surrey Senior Cup campaign tomorrow (Monday) evening with a home tie against Lingfield. Reduced admission prices apply and kids under 16 will be admitted free.

WOKING

Garry will presumably want to rest his regular first-teamers for this game and give an outing to those squad members (such as George Frith, Gez Sole and Mike Cestor) who’ve not played much in recent games and to youth team players.

LINGFIELD

Lingfield play in the Sussex County League Division One – yes, I know this is the Surrey Senior Cup! – where they currently sit in 4th place, with 21 points from 11 games, having won six, drawn three and lost two, scoring 26 goals and conceding 18. Yesterday they beat Chichester City 2-1 at home, with goals from Joel O’Hara and Harry Sintim. They have two very well-known former professional players on their books: Nicky Forster and Jamie Lawrence. Forster, now 40, made over 700 League appearances, including for Brighton and Hove Albion, before becoming Dover’s manager, whilst Lawrence, now 43, was a Bradford City ‘legend’ who also won over 20 caps for Jamaica. The squad includes an ex-Card in the shape of midfielder Gareth Graham. Craig Pitterson is top scorer with 10 goals so far.

SURREY SENIOR CUP

If the Cards beat Lingfield they will be at home to Walton Casuals, currently top of the Ryman League Division One South, in the 2nd Round.

Last season Woking were knocked out on penalties by Godalming Town at the Quarter-Final stage of this competition.

NEXT UP

The Cards travel to Wrexham next Saturday (19 October) and will also find out this week who their opponents will be in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup on Saturday 26 October. The Cards’ next home league game will be a testing encounter against high-flying Grimsby Town on Saturday 2 November.

Come on, you Cards!

P.S. Cards Trust members – don’t forget that there is a meeting at 7.30pm this Wednesday (16 October) to determine how the Trust’s votes should be allocated at the Woking FC AGM on Monday 21 October, when the Club’s first elected Board will be chosen.

Woking 5 Lingfield 2
Surrey Senior Cup 1st Round
14th October 2013

A wet night and a small crowd witnessed an entertaining game in which the home team ran out comfortable winners against their lower league opponents.

After an even first five minutes, the superior skills of the home side soon started to come through. Kevin Betsy, George Frith and John Goddard combined well in most of Woking's attacking moves. The first goal came after a flurry of good passes in the build-up set up Sole for the opening goal after seven minutes.. The visitors had short spells in the game with good build-up play of their own. In one such move, an effort on goal ended up going over the bar. Giuseppe Sole was next to try his luck from eighteen yards with Burnett making a good save. The visitors then had another shot which again cleared the bar. Seventeen minutes in and Betsy set up Reece Beckles, who increased the lead. Sole then hit the bar. On the half hour mark, Pitterson for Lingfield was totally clear in the penalty area but got his feet in a tangle and the chance was gone. Goddard then had a shot well saved. Adam Brice notched the third for Woking just short of the half-hour mark, heading in a corner from the right. Aaron Howe in the home goal was called into a rare piece of action when making a good save from Coleman. Betsy then got onto the scoresheet when running in Woking's fourth goal following good work from Goddard just before the break.

Half-time: Woking 4 Lingfield 0

With the visitors defending better and Woking dropping the pace, the second period was more of an even contest. Substitutes from both sides also disrupted the flow of the game. Lingfield had a good chance early in the half but a good cross was headed over. Sole then played a good ball to Beckles who was unable to reach the ball from a good position. In the main the visitors, unsurprisingly, were unable to control the ball long enough to have an impact on the game. They, nevertheless, had a good spell in the middle of the half and pulled a goal back through Jake Hill from a corner. Sole then easily slipped a defender for his second on eighty-four minutes before the scoring was completed a minute later when Lingfield bagged a late consolation through Hidekazu Sato.

Overall, this was an entertaining evening's football and it was good to see the home team rattle in a few goals, albeit against weaker opposition, following the two recent goalless draws at home in the Skrill Premier.

Woking also played in The Suburban League on the same night losing 4-3 to Tonbridge Angels.
