Commercial sponsors are one of the crucial building blocks of any successful club and at Woking we have been very fortunate to have great companies backing us in recent years. In the next few weeks we will profile several of our sponsors so, hopefully, they become more than a name and a logo!

To begin this series we talked to Michael Higgins who is the Managing Director of Lovetts Solicitors, who will be the main shirt sponsor on our home shirt for the coming season. Lovetts main area of expertise is in business debt collection and recovery and, based in Guildford, they have, over 25 years, built a strong reputation.

To begin Michael is your link with Woking FC primarily a commercial or football one?

Hopefully it’s a bit of both! To be honest though I have always followed Woking since I was a kid. I played for Goldsworth Park Rangers and the club always did the summer schools; the FA Trophy finals at Wembley were obviously great memories. As you get older and family responsibilities come to the fore it is great to get down to a match on the Saturday with friends. Woking is a great club all round – a real community club.

Commercially Lovetts have been involved for a few years – and now the added bonus of being the Home shirt sponsor!

Yes we started by taking a board, then sponsoring a few games and enjoying the matchday hospitality – it’s a great afternoon out. To be drawn out of the hat for the home shirt sponsorship is unbelievable and a dream come true. Commercially it will obviously be a big bonus but as a fan I just feel very lucky and privileged.

How is the lockdown affecting your business?

It’s obviously a very different world! We have adapted by just having skeleton administration staff at the office and the bulk of our 30 or so team can work productively from home, our court service is still continuing and we have a great IT team based at home as well. Businesses have to adapt and we have done quite well I think.

Final word on the football – what are your feelings about Woking FC and the future?

Very very positive – it really feels like we are on the up. To be honest Dowse has made a huge difference and right from the opening fans' forum there has been a different dynamic and a feel good factor. Obviously the promotion was amazing but last season we did so well with some great performances. It’s been an incredible few years and the club seems in a good place – both on and off the pitch. We just hope the developed facilities and backing for the club will enable us to build for the future as it is also good news for business and the town.

Thanks for your time Michael and thank you to Lovetts for your ongoing support of ‘The Cards’.
